We have a variety of clothing to donate. We would prefer to give to an organization that distributes the clothing to be worn [We have heard that the major organizations, like Vietnam Vets of America or Goodwill, often shred the clothes and sell the rags to fund their operations. Nothing wrong with that, but not what we had in mind.] Suggestions and contact info from MOL'ers appreciated. |

There is an organization called Dress for Success that gives womens' suits and career clothes to poor women getting their first jobs. You can check them out at their website: http://www.dressforsuccess.org/ I think there may be a similar organization for men now, too, but not sure. |

Also, Dress for Success has locations in Jersey City, Newark and Morris County.....so you are guaranteed your clothes will benefit someone nearby, not far away. |

The new Goodwill store on Route 22 in Springfield accepts donations and sells them right there in their huge space. |

And the Turnover Sale is almost here! Morrow Church accepts donations of almost anything for a big month-long rummage sale. The sale benefits many orgs locally. |

Hamandeggs, I've started my pile for the Turnover sale. Do you have any idea when Morrow will start accepting donations? |

I know Morristown is a bit far away but the Methodist Church there has a "clothing bank" all donated clothing is given away free to anyone who shows up there needing clothes. I bring a lot of stuff there simply because it is all put to good use. also the market street mission in morristown sells all donated items cheaply to support their food bank and homeless shelter. they also give vouchers to organizations who help poor, and in need families - these vouchers can be used for anything they sell from clothes to furniture. |

There is a clothing recycling bin at the Maplewood Recylcing center. I don't remember which organization it goes to, but it is convenient. |

Morrow Church takes (and sells) everything except food. Seriously, the sale offers clothes, toys, books, kitchen sinks, furniture, commercial appliances (every year), exercise equipment... You can donate just about anything and then come buy other stuff during the month of July. The proceeds benefit local (here and Newark) missions (including buying some of the defibrillators around town)and leftover stuff goes to several orgs in Newark. For ex, the baby stuff goes to a particular shelter and so on. To drop off, just take your stuff to the church and leave it there. That's it. |

Is that true about the Vietnam Vets? I just gave them a bunch of nice stuff and am disappointed to hear that it will only be used as rags. |

Here is where I have been bringing clothes for years: St Andrew & Holy Communion Episcopal Church South Orange Av & S Ridgewood Rd South Orange, NJ 07079 973-763-2355 They are very nice and the clothes are given to a battered women's shelter, so I am glad to see them get used. Women and children especially, but sometimes they can use men's clothing for some bigger boys. Just ask. I believe they accept clothing donations from 9-4 on weekdays, but I would call to be sure. They will give you a tax slip,if requested. |

I was shocked to read that Vietnam Veterans of America are shredding the clothing for rags, so I called them. According to the woman I spoke to, the clothing picked up in our area is brought to Red, White and Blue Thrift Store on Nottingham Way in Trenton where it is sold. Proceeds go to benefit veterans needs such as food, medical assistance, etc. |

I believe Morrow will be setting up for Turnover on Friday evening, June 16, pulling out the clothes racks, etc. So if you're donating a lot of clothes, they might appreciate dropoffs Sat. 6/17 and later. |

Thanks for the info. I have a ton of toys that my children no longer need, and it would be nice if they could go to a worthy organization. |

To all- The Morrow turnover sale is over 60 years old and we do donate 99% of the profit that we make to many organizations. As someone who has worked this sale for approximately 23 years, I ask that you seriously look at the items that you are donating. If the clothes or toys are dirty, chances are we are not going to be able to sell them. It would be so nice if clothes were bagged according the gender or age (i.e.- adult-children) If you have left over Christmas wrap that is smashed or torn up we probably are not going to be able to sell that either. Smashed bows are not going to sell either. That being said, I do have someone that looks for candle stubs every year! ;-) We have had some of the most unusual stuff donated...including a vase that was worth over $3,000!!! The church gives tax receipts if you need them and you can call the church office for information about that. The miracle on Baker Street is coming up soon and you will find me in the hallway on the main floor selling costume jewelry at the evening sales. Stop by and say hey!!! Donations should be left inside the lower Baker Street doors after June 16th. BGS |

MLJ, thank you so much for making that call. I recently put together a few nice bags of clothes to give to them and was careful not to include anything too worn, and was disappointed to read this thread about it being shredded. I feel much better and will put together more for them soon! |
