Hi, An acquaintance will visit Maplewood/S.O. soon. I know he's hoping to find a 2-bedroom for $1,000 to $1,200/mo. He asked me for recommendations of places to check out in terms of getting a feeling for the towns. I'm also thinking it would be nice for him to see areas where he might find an apartment in his price range. Any ideas? |

He's not too likely to find a decent two-bedroom for that price. One-bedrooms are generally over $1000. There are lots more apartments in South Orange than in Maplewood. Once I started looking for apartments in South Orange, I was amazed at the quantity and variety. I'm especially fond of the group of apartments with the screened porches on South Orange Ave. east of Prospect St. There've been lots of discussions of apartments over the past year on MOL. I know I've posted info in the past. If you search on "Affiliated Management" - the mangement group of the apartments I just mentioned - you can find the phone number that I posted - sorry, I don't have it handy.Good luck to your friend. |

$1000 and $1200 is the going rate for a ONE bedroom in SO-that is for the older buildings. In the newer buildings, i.e. gaslight commons, your friend will be paying almost double that for a two bedroom. Does your friend NEED a 2 bedroom or would just like the space? The one bedrooms in my building are very large and actually bigger square footage-wise than the two bedroom apartment we lived in before. PL me if you would like the info on my building (there are two bedrooms in my building-but those run $1600-$1800) Good luck to your friend! The info I have is for apartments near the village/train-I don't have any idea what the apartments run up by SHU |

Maybe West Orange might have cheaper options? I agree with pp...that rate is for a one-bedroom, at least in South Orange. You're looking in the high 1000s-2000s for a two-bedroom. |

Thanks, I'll give this info to my friend. They have a child, hence the 2 bedroom but maybe a large 1 bedroom would work out okay. |

Your friend may also want to look into renting a 2- or 3-family house divided up into apartments. I still think the rents will run higher than 1000-1200 for a 2br, but I imagine it is cheaper than most apartment complexes. We were able to rent a large 3br within walking distance to Maplewood downtown for around 1700... |

There is always Springfield. Just past Morris Ave on Wabeno are garden apartements. I think a two bedroom runs around $1,300. But it includes heat and hot water. |

I'm not sure you're allowed to have three people (a couple with a child) in a one-bedroom apartment in South Orange. A couple in my building was told by the landlord that the town building inspector said they had to move to a bigger apartment once the child reached a certain age (sorry, I don't know the age for sure--the child was 2 or 3 years old). Check with Town Hall. |
