I have some stuff that I need to get appraised to put on my insurance policy. Can anyone recommend a reputable place? Also, how much do these things cost?

Signed,

Awwww... c'mon. If you don't want anyone to think that you have expensive jewelry, you can say something like "my friend had her engagement ring appraised by......."

I know that Trimarco Jewelers on Springfield Ave in Maplewood does appraisals. I have no idea how much it would cost, but they usually have great prices so I would assume that it would be on the inexpensive side.

Be careful about appraisals. It may not be that hard to give an appraisal if you are simply looking at how much gold and how big the diamond. However, if you are talking about estate jewelry, it takes far more knowledge and expertise than many jewelers have. I took some older jewelry made by a 57th street Italian jeweler to an appraisal evening at a jeweler in the Short Hills Mall. The value of the jewelry was in the workmanship and name. The man at the store said it was worth virtually nothing because stones were small -- rather than the many thousands I later discovered the jewelry was worth

Due to increasing amount of Jewelry that my finance has decided to acquire, I have become quite practiced with the appraisal process. There are two kinds of appraisals and it’s up to you and the insurance company to figure out what you need.

The first on is a Current cost appraisal. That’s usually done with older things. The jeweler will measure the stones, the gold, and judges the clarity. He will do this without taking the stone from the setting. This gives you the price of it today.

The second is a replacement appraisal usually on new stuff, it’s all measured separately and documented. Then a price (Ours was 3 years) is predicted. In 3 years we will get another one.

I get my stuff from Mark Rothman. He’s located in Anthony Lawrence Jewelers (Milburn Ave, across from the Exxon) I’m not sure if he appraises stuff that he doesn’t sell, but it’s worth a shot.

I’m not sure of price, he’s giving me a few freebees because he knows what I’ve been spending/

Thanks, Brett. This is an older piece. It's pretty sentimental, but I suspect it may be worth a couple dollars as well.

Franny,

What is the going rate for appraisals: Is it a flat rate? A per piece rate? A percentage of the appraisal?
