My husband's nails need some attention, but he doesn't want to go anywhere too girly. Any recommendations for a basic clean-up? |

Get him a nail clipper and send him out into the yard on a sunny day. He'll figure things out. -s. |

Since he's a man and his fingers are men's fingers where does "girly" come in? It will probably be a female who provides the service. Years ago a boss of mine who was one big bearded decidedly non-girly kind of person used to choose "polish" (thankfully w/out color) when offered "buff or polish" by the manicurist in our building. I had a wonderful pedicure from Mayra at the nail joint that used to be the "card and tchotchke" place on the corner in the village. Pedicures feel great, manicures (I get one about every 2 years) too but less so. Groom well, all. David |

Most places have the same "feel". If he's really that squeemish, send him to Garubo. There are only two manicurists & they are on a separate part of the building, away from windows. They also have many regular male clients. A bit more expensive & he'll need an appointment. |

Tell him to embrace and be proud of his metrosexual side, and go to any of the shops in town. If there's anywhere in the world where a man getting a manicure and/or pedicure won't raise an eyebrow, it's probably here. Then have him come convince my husband to get his horrific fingernails--well, it's actually his cuticles, which he chews obsessively--spruced up too! |

If he's sharing the same bed and it's scratchy, make him fix it. Whether it's beard stubble, hands, feet, elbows, whatever. Hell, that goes for anyone. Women, too. Soda - what kind of hand cream do you use? It must be incredible. |

I have seen many men get their nails done at Kim's Nails. They do a good job and it is inexpensive. He should not be embarresed about it. |

Greenie: Funny you should mention it, but just this afternoon, I was advised by my lovely daughter that my skin is so dry that it's "noisy". I don't know what this means, or why she's so concerned about it. She herself is a natural blonde with very fair skin, and regularly uses moisturizers in industrial quantity, yet with equal regularity can be heard (year-round) loudly complaining about ultra-dry epidermis in every possible location on her person. While I was driving us home from a baby-naming in Philly today, this same lovely daughter even got on her mother's case, thrusting a tube of some vile-smelling unguent at her and insisting that since I was driving, Mrs. S. had two free hands (not actually the case, since at that moment she was busily reading "In Her Shoes", which, BTW, evidently goes into some considerable detail about our locality. Perhaps we should all read it, now that the movie's on cable...), and thus no excuse for not copiously smearing the gook from her crackly elbows on down to her crusty and shrivelling fingertips. Now, we people of a certain age are constantly barraged with ads for all nature of "natural" cosmetics and other pseudo-scientific hokum, but I personally think that -- short of contact dermatitis, mange, flesh-eating bacteria, jock itch, scabies, or plantar warts -- we'll all do just fine by showering regularly and avoiding extended periods of direct sunlight. -s. But to answer your question: I'm cream-free, thanks very much. And is "hand cream" different from "hand creme"? |

I'll be first one here to post honestly... 1) Everyone is encouraging you to send him to Kims or other places in town because they think it'd be funny to see him in there. 2) If he decides to get a manicure, advise him to get on Rt. 78 and drive an hour west and find a town out there to do it, if not possibly even go as far as PA. God forbid he run into someone from work while his pinky's are soaking. |

Smarty, I don't know if you are serious or not, but honestly people wouldn't make fun of him there, plenty of men go. And if they do, if he is a "real" many, he shouldn't give a flying **** what people think. |

There is the world we'd LIKE to live in, and than there is the world we REALLY live-in... I happened to walk past both Kims and Leo's this weekend mid-day, and took a peek in....very crowded, if not swamped. Not one man. I think people tend to give advice about the world we'd like to live.....it's just not reality. Conversely, I didn't see any women at my Barbershop this weekend ($12 haircuts at a great old Italian Shave/Haircut up the road)....I can't recall EVER seeing a woman there. I don't think I'd issue the challenge "A REAL woman wouldn't care what anyone thinks, and would take the $12 haircut over a $150 hair stylist cut" What you are saying is unrealistic, and borderline dumb. |

Tried a bunch of different ones unsuccessfully when I first moved out here...couldn't quite find one I was happy with....then tried Luigis Barber shop, right off of Vauxhall Rd. in Union. Place is great, but jammed crowded and you have to get there really early on weekends (7:30, to be exact). Luigi, the older Barber/owner, and two young guys clearly learning the biz from him, and doing a heck of a job. |

Smarty: Thanks, I'll try him. BTW, I wasn't sure whether or not you were serious above but now that I see that I think you were, I must say that a man can definitely have his nails done here (or for that matter most anywhere in 2006) without fear of opprobrium. (Cool, I got to type "opprobrium"!) Remember the old days of men getting a haircut, shave and manicure, the latter often simultaneously? I'm sure Luigi has worked in places where manly men got manicures! There were at least a couple of famous gangsters killed during those procedures years ago. Depending on the barber and skill level and woman and style/taste, a woman could certainly go to a barber. Women are more demanding of their haircutting people, certainly, primarily I believe because the "styling" is more complicated and time consuming. See you at Luigi's (and maybe Leo's?). Be well, all. I like that! Let me know what you think after you swing by Luigi's....couple thoughts....I was very serious about 7:30 AM on weekends....a minute past 8 AM and the wait is long/confusing. Luigi will be obvious, and he does a good classic job. Middle Chair guy does the best haircut, by far, but works slow because he's taking his time. Far right chair is the friendlies fellow who works the fastest, but is my 3rd choice if possible.
