My daughter is showing signs of nearsightedness, and the pediatric opth. office on Old Short Hills Road says they can't see her until mid-July. Can someone recommend an eye doctor who might be avaiable sooner? Thanks!

Do you need an opthalmologist, or an optometrist? Sounds like she needs an eye exam at glasses, unless there's a medical condition involved.

We went to Sally Bregman on Millburn Ave in Maplewood, from the many positive reviews on the board. It was a good experience for my daughter.

A second for Dr. Bernstein. (Although the wait may be similar unless it is an emergency)

I strongly recommend Dr. Rudy Wagner. He has an office in Roseland and an office at Columbus Hospital in Newark/Bellevue. He is a great diagnostician, good with kids and parents and Little Bookgal is very happy with him. He was highly recommended to us years ago by Dr. Jaffar, head of pediatric opthomology at Childrens' Hospital in DC.

As it happens, although Dr. Bernstein is wonderful, he is also very busy. Your post reminded me that I needed to make an appointment for my son, which I did. It is in August.

This is what I found in the phone book. However, I'm with Wilkanoid in suggesting you contact Dr. Bregman and see if she suits your needs as opposed to an opthamologist.

The Columbus Hospital number is 973 485 3186. He also has a number at UMDNJ but I don't know what it is off hand.

Second the recommendation for Dr. Wagner. Helped my daughter at 14 months regarding a blocked tear duct that required piercing (under general anesthesia). He was wonderful, especially at calming very nervous first-time parents!

(He also has a superior reputation among every doctor we double-checked with.)

I can third (or is it fourth?) Dr. Jay Bernstein. He has offices in Westfield and Cedar Knolls, which is near Morristown.

Regarding the ophthalmologist vs. optometrist issue: I am a true believer that kids should see an ophthalmologist sometime before they start Kindergarten. There are all kinds of issues that cannot be detected by the vision screening at school and the pediatrician's office. I found this out serendipitously. Fortunately, it was not too late for my child to get treatment.

Another plug for Dr. Wagner. He saw my daughter in the NICU at St. B and later for a follow-up. Very calming, reassuring - put me and the little one at ease. Answered all my Q re: what he was doing / looking for and why.

Everyone who knows Dr. Bregman adores her. When I filled a prescription for eyedrops she gave my daughter, the pharmacist went out of his way to say how nice Dr. Bregman is.

And it should go without saying that she's serving our eyes very well.
