I have 2 kids, and both my husband and I work. My kids are currently attending the after school program. And somehow, we've been able to make that work this year. However, in the fall, we will need someone to take them to various after school activities, since the schedules are not as working-mom-friendly as they were this past year. Not sure how to go about this. I tried a nanny service last year to do a search. But since the requirement is only 3-6:30pm M-F, there were no bites. Most nannies were searching for a full time/full day position.

I posted in the "work" section here on MOL, but so far, nothing. So now, I'm not quite sure where to go. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Might try posting at Seton Hall? I haven't done so, but it sounds like you need a student schedule, rather than someone who actually wants a full time job.

An Au Pair might also be an option, if you would consider a live-in. Again, haven't tried this myself,

This seems like such a great job for a retiree - someone who likes kids, is looking for something to get them out of the house and earn a few extra $. I don't know if there's a good resource/network to find people like that, but just a thought.

OK, so let me ask you ladies a question:

I'm expecting my first child in the fall, and thanks to severence from my job that will be ending not too long afterwards, I probably won't work for about a year. I'm not sure what I want to do afterwards, but we've determined that we'll be OK with me having a part-time salary for a while.

I've been thinking, and this thread has me thinking even more, is there a market for a mom with a one-year-old to do work for other women in the community? Is it feasible to take on jobs like the one petite-mom needs? Is it feasible that someone would hire me to take care of their child in their home, while I bring my child as well? What other options might there be?

It seems to me that our community has such a need for responsible people to take care of kids or households in some capacity. Is it feasible for a mom to fill that need in some way?

Sorry to hijack the thread - but maybe it will spur other stay-at-home moms to help you out?

I think there might be a market for that. There are two women that I know of (retirees) that offer a "shuttle service" for the local preschools in the area. There's def. a need for this as most schools start at 9 am and working parents can't wait for drop off. I imagine there are similar needs for families who have non-driving nannies and want their kids to go to after school programs.

Word of caution: check with your auto insurance to see what kind of additional insurance you'd need for your car if you were using it for work purposes and specifically to carry children.

To Petite Mom and Ess: Perhaps you can find one person to suit both of your needs and that might be more appealing/enticing to a potential candidate? Also, try posting a flier at the library or other public places. I think there are retirees who would like this kind of work.

Lastly, try calling the preschools and finding out the names and contact info for these "shuttle services." Perhaps they also do afternoon and evening runs?

Thanks for your advice everyone!

susan1014 - Is there a Message Board for Seton Hall where I can post this? Or did you mean post a flyer there?

Dego Diva - I definitely think there is a market for this, and I think some people offer it now. I'm sure that there are other people (like ess) who have the same problem I have.

Former Cowgirl - I will try posting in the library -- great idea! I do know a couple of "shuttle services", but for some reason, the afternoons are tough to get into. Even the person my daughter used when she was in pre-school was not available for any afternoon activities.

Just wanted to mention that someone who read this on MOL did PL me. We haven't talked to each other yet, but hopefully we can work something out. MOL is great!

I hope you can work this out with barter rather than money. That way, it would seem cooler, and it would not be in the IRS's radar.

Dego--I did a job similar to that for a little less than a year after I had my son. It was great. I was able to spend quality time with my son, bring him everywhere with me and take care another child at the same time. If you find the right situation it can be a wonderful opportunity.

Another suggestion if you are looking for part-time work is a YMCA. They have babysitting for your child while you work.

No clue how Seton Hall works, but I'm guessing they have a student employment office of some sort that could tell you.

Thanks red, that's very reassuring, and I like the YMCA idea too!
