We have been told there is a beach that lets dogs run around down around exit 117 or something like that. I could be making it up. Anyways, we've never been and would love to take a trip down there for some fun. And our dog would love us even more for it. :-)

Anyone been there and if so, how do we get there?

Thanks!

Yes, Sandy Hook. You can't take dogs to the beach, but have to go on the bayside, across from the beaches. There is sand, and water and most dogs don't know the difference betweent the "real" beach and that. It's really nice, you can hike for quite some time through all the trails. To get there, take exit 117 off the GSP and follow the signs for Sandy Hook. It's about 10 miles after you get off the exit.

I think you have to get there before Memorial Day or after Labor Day.

Also, in the off season -- which ends as of this weekend, sadly -- you can take dogs on the beaches of LBI. We took our dog down there in January on a warm 60-degree day while looking at summer rentals, and he had a blast. There were lots of dogs running around. I believe this may apply to other beaches closer than LBI. Now that summer is upon us, however, things are different. We are taking our dog to our LBI summer rental with us (we found a dog-friendly rental), and will try to squeeze him onto the beach at sundown, but we're not expecting to get away with much. Too bad. Dogs love oceans.

HikeWithYourDog.com

The wide, white-sand beaches of the Jersey shore are some of America's most popular and there isn't much space for a dog to squeeze into in the summertime. Most of the beaches in New Jersey (***), including the Sandy Hook Unit of the Gateway National Recreation Area, open to dogs in the off-season. Summertime visitors should take their dogs to Island Beach State Park, one of the last undeveloped stretches at the Jersey Shore. Pets are allowed on the non-recreational beaches in this ten-mile oasis. Dogs will never get to trot down the historic wooden planks of the Atlantic City boardwalk, however - no dogs are permitted on the beach or boardwalk of the Grande Dame of America's seaside resorts. Dogs are also not allowed anywhere in the Victorian village of Cape May but dog lovers can travel south of town to Sunset Beach, a sand strip at the southernmost point of the Jersey shore that is actually on the Delaware Bay. In the water offshore of "Dog Beach" are the remains of the Atlantis, a unique concrete ship built to transport soldiers in World War I.

I think that area of Sandy Hook is where the nude beaches are. I could be wrong. I could just see newneighbor, walking poochy through the bayside which is chockablock with little nooks and crannies where people sunbathe and seeing a bit more nature than he/she expected.

Should I assume that all these sites on the hikewithyourdog.com site are meant to be ON LEASH?

Nope, the hikewithyourdog.com site states that the bayside of Sandy Hook is ok for dogs year round. Check out the page.

Some beaches allow dogs up to the second week in June, or right before school lets out

I don't know when the exact cutoff is. It might be Monday.

It's run by the National Park Service. Maybe you could call them to ask.
