Depends on a lot of things. Age and experience of the babysitter. How many kids and what ages. Will the sitter be a mother's helper and you'll be home or very nearby, or will they have more responsiblity like feeding and getting the kids to bed? Overall, I think $10 or $12 for an experienced older sitter who stays while you go out and away.

Younger babysitter (14), has some experience. Watching a 6 year old for about 3 hours. I will be 10 mins away. Babysitter's mom is just next door. No feeding, but I will leave out snacks for both of them. |

We pay our sitter, who's in her young 20's, $10/hr. She's been with us for almost 4 years, so I'm sure she charges more for other families. But b'twn $10-12 seems to be the rate. |

petite_mom, for the situation you described I would suggest starting the 14 year old at $6 and then moving up to $7 in a few months. I don't think a 14 year old should get what a sitter in her 20's can command. Just an opinion. I would ask the sitter if that rate is acceptable. |

I agree with Wendy, was even going to suggest you start at $5. What's minimum wage these days? You say she has some experience. Do you know the other people she babysits for? Can you ask them how much they pay? |

Thanks for the input everyone! I do know some of the people she has babysat for, but not enough to ask them how much they pay. I will go with the suggestions of Wendy and Me&. She's our next door neighbor, so I want to be sure I pay her fairly. (I have never used a babysitter before, so this is new territory for me!) |

I think she will be offended by $5/hr. |

We have two tenth-grade babysitters (15 years old) and they charge $8 per hour. |

I've used 3 different 8th graders this past year and they've each charged $7/hour. |

I think the going rate for middle school babysitters is about $7 per hour. I've seen more variation in the rates for high school babysitters ($8-10). I usually just ask them what they charge. |

7th-8th graders get $7-9/hour depending on age, number of kids and if diaper changing is involved. They usually get a few dollar premium if you get home after 11pm. |

Thanks for the input everyone! I had a great night out! Hopefully my babysitter thinks that what I gave was ok. My daughter had a great time and we will definitely call on her again. |

Miss Manners touched on this issue this week. A babysitter asked her for advice. Miss Manners says that the rule of etiquette, which says that you should not discuss money, does not hold in the realm of business. And this is business. So neither of you should be shy about it. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/05/23/AR2006052301859. html

I did ask before last night, but I didn't get a specific reply. "Anything is fine." That's why I posted here, as I have never used a babysitter before (had a full time live in nanny previously) and had no clue on any rates. I did pay well above the $4 mentioned in this article . |

My 14-year-old (9th grader) daughter gets $8 (sometimes a bit more) for babysitting. I understand that this is pretty typical for the younger high schoolers. Older sitters, especially if they drive or can stay very late, etc. would get more. I paid $10 to college-aged sitters 5-10 years ago, so it might be more now for that group. |

We technically pay our 14 year old $8/hour, but will sometimes cushion it depending on the circumstances. We also have a 10th grader who babysits and normally charges $10/hour, but I told her that we pay our sitters between $6-$8 (we have one 3 yo child, who goes to bed by 8pm). She was fine with $8/hour. I would pay $10/hour for a babysitter who drove him/herself to and from, for sure. |

Babysitters who drive to/from your house are golden. Well worth the $10/hr! |
