I have a 2.5 year old currently in the Y program, and he'll be in their 2 year preschool program starting htis fall. I'd prefer him to go to a shorter preschool, and preferably a less-expensive one than the Y. I have a kind of a flexible schedule, so he really doesn't need the extend care that they provide. Any tips, or experience with other plaes (will go to West Orange, too)?

P.S.: I really did search the topic...

Oh yeah, by part time I mean like, half-days, or 2 days a week (y only offers 3 full days as a minimum).

have you checked with playhouse? i think they offer a two day program for a half day. they also have a sliding scale tuition. not sure how their tuition compares with the y. playhouseonline.org should answer fairly basic questions.

good luck in your search.

We loved Playhouse, they have short days for younger children, when my daughter was almost 3 I think she went 3 days a week for 2.5 hours a day.

They are on 88 franklin St. in WO - ona good day it takes a little under 15 minutes from Maplewood - A lot of people car-pool too.

Shanabana, Playhouse has a sliding tuition scale, so it's affordable for most families.

If it's sounds like a possiblity, call now to get a tour while school is still in session.

Very nurturing environment, Playhouse is a progressive school that's been around for over 50 years. My daughter (now in 1st grade in public school) still writes to her teacher and her best friends are all kids she met at Playhouse.

My daughter has loved her 2 years at Weekday Cooperative Nursery School at 111 Irvington Ave (at intersection of Prospect, SO Ave, and Irvington Ave). Their phone number is 973-762-7879, and the director's name is Pat Rotundi.

It's a warm and welcoming community. The 2 1/2 year old program (which our son will be in) is Tues and Thurs from 9-11:30. As a cooperative, you'll be asked to be the teacher helper in the classroom roughly 1 time per month.

Although they do not have an outdoor playspace, they have a very large gym space that the kids visit everyday with lots of cars, tricycles, etc...

Good luck.

Btw, I should add the following on Weekday Nursery:

The 3 year old program is M, W, F from 9 - 11:30 and the 4 year old program is M-F from 9- 11:30. The optional extra lunch hour is Mondays from 11:30 - 1.

Was just going to post about weekday. My son is about to complete the 2 year old year there with the new 2 year old teacher. She is excellent! So kind and gentle and warm. A great intro to teachers and school for the younger set. Can't wait to have another one in her class.

I have been a Weekday Mum for 3 years, next will be my last, and I will be so sad. Pat Rotondi is the 4 year old Teacher and Director and she is just wonderful. Liz Lehrer teaches the 3 year olds and I adore her, and although I haven't had the 2 1/2 year old teacher Diane teach my girlies as she only started last Sept, she has subbed for Liz a couple of times, and she is so in tune with the children.

The Weekday Nursery is just the kind of place that I thank my stars I found for my kids... a loving, nurturing environment, where they are allowed to grow, learn and have fun.

I think Open Door Nursery has a spot or two available for the fall. Our older son loves it there and our younger guy starts in the two's this September. The two's program is 2 or 3 days a week for 2 1/2 hours. The kids love Mrs. Peri. She is very patient and loving.

does anyone know of a preschool that accepts children aged 2 by september? most of the schools i am researching require that the child is 2.5...my son misses the cutoff by 3 months, and i would hate to wait a whole extra year!

thanks!

If they have a space, I think weekday may take him in January... He will not meet the agreed age in Sept, but there is a possibility that he would in January. Give Pat Rotondi a call, it's worth a try, but he would also need to be fully toilet trained being a co-op.

My son started at Weekday in December with 3 other kids. They start out with a smaller class and then add a few kids mid year. Not sure if those spots are taken yet, but definitely worth a call.

I believe that the temple preschools, Oheb Shalom, Beth El and Sharey Tefilo have options for younger children. Try giving them a call.

Shanabana, here part of a list I compiled with part time and/or half day local preschools in alphabetical order. I've tried to list websites or phone numbers where I have them. My kids are at the Y so I have no first hand experience with any of these. My friends like Hedwig Gruenewald, Open Door, St. Stephens (although they use the full time program) and Far Brook (which is very pricey). I've heard great things on MOL about Morrow, Playhouse and Prospect.

Good luck!
