There are these sweet smelling trees/bushes along my alking route and I absolutely love them! I am not sure what they are but would love to wake up in the springtime smelling that in my yard. Any ideas? |

Can you describe them? Where exactly are they? |

Viburnum or Lilacs? Did they have white flowers or purple? |

I would say mock orange. Its a bush and has white flowers that have the most wonderful scent. |

It sounds like Jasmine to me....a beautiful and heady scent, especially during the evening. |

If they are blooming now, you could be smelling peonies (very large flowers) or rose bushes which have recently been blooming. Most recently, my most fragrant shrub was a tiny blooming lilac called meyeri lilac or something like that. Absolutely heavenly when you walk by! If you can reach some, pick a couple of leaves and a flower (if they are small) as you pass. Take it to Millstone and I'd bet one of the master gardeners there can identify it for you. (Or, if they are large flowers, or unreachable leaves, take a close-up photo w/digital device and show that to the guys at Millstone.) Also, you could post a pic here on MOL, although I never can do that b/c my jpg file is always too big. |

Ditto on the mock orange. Our yard has about a dozen bushes and it is absolutely heaven right now. White flower about 1-2 inches in diameter. |

Proud daddy, any chance you could post a photo or find out exactly what kind of bush they are? It does sound like heaven. |

So they're really called "mock orange"? Thanks so much for the photo. |

Does the mock orange have thorns? I thought I had a rugosa rose bush (and I may still) - the flowers look different than in this photo, but have 4 petals. |

No thorns. This website shows a much better photo than the one I took. http://www.naturehills.com/new/product/shrubs_productdetails.aspx?proname=Mock+O range+-+Sweet |

Thanks for suggesting honeysuckle. I was finally able to put a name on an amazing fragrance I was trying to define. Every time I pass these flowers I think Jasmine but I knew it could not be it. I found this picture of honeysuckle on Wikipedia.
And based on those links below it looks like the Japanese honeysuckle is considered a weed in the US. Think twice before planting it even if it smells great! http://www.hiltonpond.org/ArticleHoneysuckle000510.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honeysuckle |

I adore the scent of honeysuckle too, although I wage a life-and-death battle with it each spring. It is immortal, unkillable, so so I cut it back to the ground each year without a pang of guilt. If I didn't, it would strangle everything in a season. |

Thanks for the better photo - I do indeed have a rugosa rose. Noticed the black spot on the leaves today. And my neighbor has a mock orange - which smells AWESOME! - and the leaves are different. |
