Posted this in Sport section, but with no response. Can anyone tell me of a local league that plays a couple of times a week? Even open gym or pickup games would be good. I hate exercising unless it involves a sport! Thanks |

The South Mountain YMCA used to have open gym games on Tue nights, Thu nights and Sun mornings. You don't have to be a member, but it costs $5. The Summit YMCA has stuff too, but you have to be a member. I also recall that someone formed an over-35 league in Maplewood. Don't know the details though. If you find anything, post it. I'm interested in taking up the game again. |

the Maplewood South Orange pick-up scene is a very secretive shadowy thing. Folks who partake are very discreet, not wanting others to know about it and cut in on the fun. So if you get to know folks who play in such games (I am talking pick-up basketball, but the same goes for other pick-up sports), let them know youre interested. Summer may be a good time to cut in on one of these well-guarded hoop lists since numbers are usually down in the summer. Alternatively, Sunday mornings at Taylor Park in Millburn is a very good, competitive pick-up basketball game..but have a decent game if youre going to play. Summit Y has pick-up games at lunchtime daily...good level of competition. Not sure when else they play. South Mountain Y games are 4 on 4 because of the size of the gym. Havent played there in years but the weeknight crowd used to be mostly guys in their 20s. There is an over-35 league in Maplewood...the league runs from November until March. Most teams have sponsors and have been together for some time. You can contact the Rec Department and put a team together or let them know youre a singleton looking to hook up with a team..last year, a handful of guys got placed on a team that needed more bodies. Entry fee for a team is arouns $750 but you dont pay for refs or scorekeepers. Also a good level of competition. |

Thanks, Hank and Dave. I'll try to check out the South Mountain Y to start off, but the over-35 league sounds promising if I could get on a team. |
