There are a couple of decent places to look around and try some clubs out. There's New York Golf Center on Rte. 22 in Springfield (center island). They have a large selection of clubs and its a good place to start your search. It helps to have an idea of what you are looking for w/r/t typr of clubs. Are you looking for something more forgiving? Are you a good golfer? Are you just starting out? Sounds like this isn't your first set of clubs so NY Golf may be a good place to start. There is also a fairly new Golfsmith store on Rte. 10 in Livingston (just west of the circle). They have a decent selection of clubs and they even have some used sets that are very close to new. I think both places have decent set ups so that you can hit the clubs you like. When you've narrowed it down to a couple of sets it pays to look on the internet at places like www.tgw.com to get some prices. I went through this process a couple of years ago and I can tell you that there are too many choices out there. Once you narrow it down to type of shaft, forged vs. cast etc. you can weed out lots of different clubs and your process will be much smoother. Good luck. |

I just purchased my first set ever of golf clubs (I just started playing this spring) online at GolfDiscount.com, and got a great deal -- a set of Adams womens's irons, woods and driver for $399. Normal retail price is $500. I am also told there is a great golf discount place in Secaucus, but I had trouble making time to get over there. That Secaucus place has a driving range for testing clubs. I also looked at clubs at Golfsmith on Rt 10, but found the prices to be much higher than online -- I tested the Adams set in person, then bought online. But Golfsmith has a great selection. Still, I think you do best online. There is GolfDiscount.com, Golf Galaxy.com and GolfWarehouse.com, for starters. Good luck! |

I highly recommend getting whatever clubs you get custom fitted. I did that with my 5, 3 and 7 wood and it makes all the difference in the world. |

Growler, Hommell: I am just a beginner, so I may ask some dumb questions, but I thought if you got your clubs cut down and regripped, you lose all the flexibility. I was told this was a bad idea by the golf pro who is teaching me (because I had the option of adapting Mr Zoesky1's driver). Other golfers have agreed. Is there something different about the custom fitting process? |

I don't mean to cut and regrip a club. But just buying a set of clubs off the shelf may not help you out and could hurt your game. Custom fitting is the process of knowing your height, your wrist to floor height, your swing speed and what club you would use to hit 150 yards out. With all this information a good salesperson will fit you with the correct set of clubs that match your level of play. If they don't, walk away b/c they are just trying to make a sale, not make you a happy golfer. And at the beginner stage, you don't need a super set of clubs. Just a set that fits you and how you play. Once I got my custom fitted 3, 5 and 7 wood my handicap went down by at least 7 strokes. I got them from from http://www.warriorcustomgolf.com/ and I love them. |

Right. OK, that makes sense, Growler. Since I am a beginner, the Adams set will be good for me, I think. Not a cheap crappy set, but not going to break the bank, either. Thanks! |
