Can anyone recommend a good, preferably waterproof, NON-GREASY sunblock for babies? I've been using Coppertone's Waterbabies (and the Target brand equivalent), and as soon as I apply it I want to give my kid a shower. Also, whenever I apply it,(as opposed to my husband), it seems to get in her eyes, usually after she rubs them. (So today, I actually did have to give her a shower. *sigh*) Should I not be putting it on her hands? She's 17 months, if that makes a difference. |

My kids' skin (esp. their faces) is so sensitive I could never use any type of sunscreen like that near their eyes. For everyday, I use Lubriderm SPF 15 on their faces, and now that it's sunnier I will use a spray on their arms/legs/necks/etc. Johnson &Johnson also makes (or has in the past) a very gentle SPF 15 that my kids could tolerate on their faces. I will also use some more "cosmetic" sunscreens on their faces and these tend to be less greasy. I bought a few Neutrogena dry touch sunblock SPF 45 and will use that on their faces for when they need more than the SPF 15, but with a hat, they've really never burnt even when they only use the 15 on their faces. Yes, they are really fair. |

Tink, I was wondering when you had your baby, but not surprized that we didn't hear from you much immediately after. For J.B. Jr. we used sunblock in a limited way, but prefered nature's oldest sunblock-- shade. When they are in a carriage or stroller, the shade is up. He has lots of hats, always wore long sleeves. (A swim shirt in the water.) By the way, how's your back? J.B. |

Whole Foods has several really good brands of sunscreens - babies, kids, adults that I find to be much milder/less greasy than the drugstore brands. I like the Alba Botanica and JASON brands. |

We liked the Bull Frog spray when they were little. Hard to get on their faces, so we used the cream version, but the gel spray on the rest of their body. And JB - you can get just as sunburnt in the shade as the full on sun. And clothes don't protect the skin much either (unless you buy the sunbrella brand clothes) |

Hey J.B., thanks for asking! My back is geting better but still not 100%. I had my baby boy on May 18th (2 weeks early! THANK GOD!), and my chiropractor was on vacation all last week, so I'm finally going to see him again today. I'm hoping now that I'm no longer pregnant, he can be a little more aggressive with my back and I can move on! |

There is a terrific Neutrogena wide-stick sunscreen for faces that I use on my kids. I keep one in the car, beach bag, purse, etc. It is water-proof, sweat-proof and doesn't run into their eyes like the creams and sprays can. I also highly recommend Avon's sunscreen/bugspray combo. It is DEET free and available in several different types (cream, spray, pump, towlette) - also doesn't smell bad. I cover the kids and their clothes in it before they go off to camp. FYI, there is a blue-colored one that the kids really love (the blue fades after a couple minutes, but it is a nice visual aid regarding full-coverage.) I second the recommendation for Neutrogena. Good products, and they don't seem to irritate my kids like some of the others. Since my children are way past the toddler stage, though, they really like the spray-on sunscreens. They seem to put more on if they spray themselves (or each other). |

Elizabeth (momof4peepers), I don't know where you read or heard that people can get sunburned through clothes, but anyone who has seen a tan line knows that's bull. Now I have to bust a link on the topic to prove that my opinion is actually correct. http://www.svch.net/brochures/broc_sc3.asp "Babies under six months of age may be sensitive to chemicals, fragrances, coloring and PABA contained in sunscreen, so avoid their use. Simply keep babies in the shade or covered up with hats and clothing." There you go, Tink. An actual informed opinion. J.B.

JB - I'm one of those people that burns through my clothes (as is my DH) and was told by the dermatologist that it's not uncommon. If we weren't both happily married, I'd offer to show you the scars from my cancerous moles that had to be removed. |

Uh, no, that's okay. I believe you. I also just re-read that Tink's baby is 17 months old, which I find hard to believe since she was pregnant this past winter. I think the question is for the older 17 month old girl, but my answer was for the newer May 18th boy. Oh boy, I'm sorry I got involved. Carry on. J.B. |

Tink and JB - Perhaps you're both right. I once had a bathing suit with wide red and white stripes. (At 12 years old, the fact that I looked like a barber pole did not register.) Although I had distinct tan lines, I also had an unusual striped tan across my torso that corresponded with the stripes on the suit. Based on this experience I believe your skin can be affected by sun exposure - even those parts that are covered. I think depends on the fabric. As for sunscreen, we use Coppertone's sensitive skin sunscreen for the children (3YO and twin 1YOs). We also use that on our faces, but use NO-AD sunscreen on our arms, legs, etc. Although the whole family has skin allergies, we haven't had a problem with these products. We don't put sunscreen on the little ones' hands when they're teething or going through one of those everything-in-the-mouth phases. |
