I've done the following quite successfully and with no hassle - several years ago. Call Maplewood Movie Theater to get a birthday package for Saturday. Over the Hedge is playing. Do pizza/cupcakes at Trattoria first (have kids dropped off there at 12 or a bit before). While you can't reserve tables at Trattoria, there shouldn't be a problem at that time of day. Speak to Trattoria the day before to confirm what time they'll open on Saturday and tell them how many pizzas you think you'll need for serving 20 kids. You bring the cupcakes. Then time it so you guys see the movie after. Have parents pick up outside the theater. Good luck and have fun. |

thanks all. i think we may just wing it. hubby got over (for now) his initial "freak out". i'd love the movie thing but my child is the only kid around who hates movie theaters! |

Alg- If they all have the energy your little guy has how about a party at the Y? You still may have time? Or Hoop Heaven. Or Diamond Gymnastics? My sister has done parties at Hoop and Diamond for my nephews. They're a little older then yours, but they are boys and they had a GREAT time! There's less of a distraction at these places then Upchuck Cheese. |

Wegmans or Ikea? They both have indoor playgrounds.
Sorry; couldn't resist. Is there a McD's around with an indoor playground? They do B-day parties. |

Indoor treasure hunts are very good, but 20 kids is a bit of a stretch. Maybe 4-5 "teams"? Twister is a good indoor game that gets the kids very giggly...........again, you have too many kids, but you could probably borrow a few sets and have several games going at once (you need more than 2 adults to have this many in your house, IMHO). We've cleared out the living room and the basement play room area for games. Balloon "volleyball" is a good one. Also hockey.......we have a small, plastic, inflatable "puck" to use. There are these great noise-making balloons that go crazy when released that kids love to chase.....the Maplewood toy store has them. Make-your-own ice cream sundae is good. Provide tons of sprinkles and such for the kids to go nuts with. Good luck. We were stuck with an indoor party on a rainy weekend too. But it was a 4 person sleep-over, so not as difficult to handle. I believe in the old adage........."Don't invite more kids than your child's age". Lots of kids get too worked up and wind up falling to pieces, but of course that varies from kid to kid and it helps to have parents who can handle it all well.

we had planned on 10 kids and things spiraled. we have pin the tail on the unicorn/mammoth (made by his girl"friend") - unicorn for the girls, mammoth for the boys. we have a limbo pole thingee, a bull piniata (sp) -- the kind you have to beat with a bat, we have arranged for the ice cream man to come, Twister, and we have a few backyard games to play need be. I still haven't put the treasure hunt together -- I am a bit overwhelmed by stress. My back-up plan was to see if the side room at Bunny's was available and relocate the party there -- so Leslie, I'll ask you tonight. We'll most likely be there for the boy's birthday dinner. Greenetree -- I have said theat Ikea would be the perfect birthday place. Unfortunately the boy got to tall for their playplace. |

Don't know if you're son is "too old," but they do birthdays at the fire station (for a "suggested" donation) and you can rent the civic center building for $25 for a couple of hours. Don't know if it's too late to book now. Or just move all your prepared activities to the civic center for space so you don't have 20 kids running amok in your house! |

I would imagine you'd call the rec department to rent the civic house (center, whatever the heck you call it). And I'm sure you call the Fire Department directly. I've never done either, but know folks who have. If you don't have any luck with the civic house, let me know and I'll ask my friend who just did this in March. You're probably right about "stressing out enough." It's probably along the same lines as bringing an umbrella when they forecast rain, so you can be assured it won't rain and you get to carry the damned thing around all day! |

thanks all. the party was a total free-for-all. about 10 kids RSVP's the morning of or didn't RSVP at all. So there were TONS of kids. it rained. the kids threw water balloons at each other. opened up all the windows of my house and were squirting guns at the other kids outside. parents across two town were most likely cursing my name last night after picking up SOAKING wet children. then the crazy birthday boy and his "girlfriend" holed up in his bedroom and opened every gift, separating gifts from presents. thanks you notes will go out with an exsplanation. there is candy and gum ground in to my diningroom carpet. oh well. thank god it's over. |
