Rich,

I'm sorry that you are in need of a divorce lawyer. But, this a hell of a way to enter the MOL community.

Let me be the first to say, "welcome." It can be a very supportive place during some difficult times.

Good luck and keep posting,

J.B.

Big thumbs up for Jean Campbell. Divorce sucks a little bit less when your lawyer has a sense of humor. 973-509-8900 (Montclair).

Rich: So sorry that you and your partner need a divorce lawyer. Hope that you can get by with mediation--it is far less expensive and antagonistic if you both can agree to be reasonable. But even with mediation, you still need a lawyer at the end to review things, and you have to be careful, because sometimes lawyers disagree with the mediation settlement and try to change things.

One thing I learned from my attorney--to the degree possible, try to communicate with your ex directly in writing yourself. Having an attorney write a letter to the ex's attorney only costs everyone more money. Some letters, of course, need to go through the attorneys, but most don't.

I was very pleased to use Susan Reach Winters at Budd Larner (973) 315-4408. She actually wrote the book on Family Law in NJ.

She is no-nonsense, down-to-earth, and very straightforward. When I first met her, she set ground rules for me--that she was my lawyer, not my therapist, and if I wanted to work on my anger I should do that with my therapist and not through the legal process because doing it through the legal process only creates more costs and animosity and everyone loses except the lawyers (and you don't work through the anger, anyhow). Sounds funny now, but it was so true and very sobering. Yet, for all that, she was compassionate with both me and my ex (even when the ex and her lawyer wigged out a bit).

Susan also told me in the first meeting about where the settlement would likely wind up, given our relative income, child care status, etc., and she was dead on. She based this on her knowledge of case law, statutes, and experience. It provided a good guide for me as we were negotiating the agreement, helping me keep perspective.

There is no way around it--divorce SUCKS. But if you can keep the process civil through mediation, or if your lawyers help keep things in perspective, it can be done in a less painful way.

PS. If there are custody issues involved and you have questions about the evaluation process, PL me.

I don't mean to be inappropriate here, but does this mean there's soon to be a new single man in town?

Hang in there, Rich - you've come to the right place for support.

Rich, I got divorced three years ago and had a fantastic lawyer who helped me through an exceedingly complicated and messy situation. Feel free to PL me or email me at jackieday1@yahoo.com (sometimes my PL won't work) for his name and details (he is not listed in the phone book or in many divorce directories, and works by referral only ... he would NOT be happy if I posted his info here).

Good luck. I wish you and your partner well.

Sorry about this turn of events. It's time to realize that this is the beginning of things getting better in your life. But you will go through the worst part first.

I recommend Richard Goldsmith. I've used him in divorce matters since my divorce. I didn't know him when I was divorcing. I wish I did.

Tom, my late husband used Richard Goldsmith (based on your recommendation to me on this board) and I thought he was a pr*ck. Obnoxious, mysogenist, ripped apart details for which a family law attorney had no business building up hours. We could have been done thousands of dollars sooner if he spent more time communicating with his own client than my attorney. But maybe that's what some people want in a divorce attorney.

(That's not a dig at you, Tom.)

I recommend Feinberg & Feinberg in South Orange. 973-378-8886. I've never been married much less divorced, but I know they're the real deal because of their longtime community presence and excellent reputation. Okay, I know them and their office staff and love them all. Shoot me (not really)!

Sorry to hear that, las. I've used Goldsmith for other things. He even worked to avoid billing me excessively by making sure my motion was worth filing. Of course, no one's record is thoroughly consistent.
