I know they put you in touch with aupairs, seemingly for just ten quid. Anybody ever heard anything about this service? |

Don't know anything about them, but the only legal au pairs are through one of the au pair agencies like Au Pair in America, au Pair USA, Cultural Care, etc. |

What does that mean, legal au pair? Aren't they just people with jobs? |

Maybe legal isn't the right word, maybe more like "legitimate." The agencies do all the background checks, make sure the girls have their papers in order, connect them with other aupairs in the area and give you a resource in case you have any issues. I know a number of people that use Au Pair in America and when you get someone that's just not working out you'll really want to have the agency to back you up and help you get it straightened out. |

Au pairs come from overseas on a J-1 visa, having gone through background checks, interviews and training/orientation on arrival. No agency can do that for a tenner. |

What akb and NYC said. An legitimate au pair is an official designation in this country. The au pair agencies operate under certain mandates from the U.S. Dept of Justice. They all have to follow the same rules when it comes to rate of pay, length of stay, type of visa, number of working hours, etc. The agencies differ in how they place the au pairs, how they group the local au pair "clusters", and things like that. |
