Hi, does anyone know where I can adopt a free (or inexpensive) puppy besides the animal shelters? |

petfinder.com You may have to pay just for vacine shots. You can even pick out a particular breed or mix. Most also have pictures available and give a history of temperament.

Agree with Bill232. But if your main concern is price, keep in mind that the cost of keeping a dog is MUCH greater than the initial cost of buying one. |

I am concerned that you aren't interested in shelters. Have they turned you down? |

Shawna I'm with you! Alyssa, why not a shelter? The JAC and Mount Pleasant Animal Shelters both have puppies waiting for a loving home. Please consider trying one of these places first. I also think there were some MOL people looking for homes for dogs a month or so ago. |

Petfinder.com animals are also from shelters, many from this area. You can pick the local area on the search section of the site as well. All of the dogs are cared for as well from volunteers trying to find homes for these unwanted dogs. |

Alyssa, It is great that you want to bring a dog into your life. Please, as Bill232 suggests, explore Petfinder. Besides shelter dogs, available homeless dogs in foster care with rescue groups are listed on Petfinder. Dogs in foster care have had a chance to adjust to a home environment, and typically the foster parent can give you background on the animal's temperament and personality. Most reputable rescues require the completion of a long questionnaire, references from veterinarians, home checks and an adoption fee.If money is a problem, and everything else is in order, they may be willing to work out a financial arrangement. But be advised that any companion animal requires things that must be considered in calculating any budget. A dog is a committment for at least 10 to 15 years. Whatever you do---PLEASE research the type of dog you would like. Remember, they only stay cute little puppies for a couple of months. You might also, as part of your research want to check out the thread in Soapbox entitled: "How Can These People Live with Themselves?" Good luck in your search, Calli
