I never can understand points for a ticket. In NJ does anyone have any experience getting points waived for a ticket by showing up to court? |

Yes, they almost always knock off two points for your trouble. However, you have to pay court costs. |

I'm sure it wasn't your fault. They post those signs all the way on the side of the road, knowing full well if you look there you might mis-dial your call or spill your chai! duh... |

Not sure, but I think if yo go fight a moving violation, they might knock the points down but there is a State mandated $200-250 surcharge. Anyone know for sure? |

There was a thread on this recently. We chose to take the 3 points and not pay the $450 it would have cost to reduce it to two. It's on the DMV website. But, I must say that I'm impressed that you managed to even get to the speed limit on 22; it's usually a parking lot. |

Very true greentree, it was far west on 22. This is nuts. In AZ you could go take a class for a day, get the points off, and you only paid for the class. |

Red- Welcome to NJ! I got a ticket a few years back for supposedly speeding on Ridgewood. I drive this street every day and a well aware of the speed traps; so I never speed on Ridgewood. Went to court to fight the ticket. Guess what? A dozen other people were there fighting tickets issued on the same street. None of them were speeding either. Most of us paid the $450 to remove the ticket from our driving record. |

You can also take a class here, in Florham Park. Let me know and we can car pool--I had a lead foot for a while a few months back. Got to pay the court costs, surcharge, and still get to take the class, but worth it to keep the points down--yup, was going THAT fast. |

The extra surcharge is recent; it used to be the original fine and court cost. Depending on the municipality, $25-$35. Then, the State of NJ realized that most of us went to court to reduce the points to save our insurance. So, they came up with the surcharge. I don't have time to post my usual rant, but, considering that you can't do it very often and have to have fewer than 5 points to reduce new points, it ends up being an extortion fee on basically good drivers. |

That is my thought as well. In the long run it may be worth it for insurance reasons..... |

It all depends on the municipality. I got a speeding ticket in January and spoke with the prosecutor and he knocked all the points off. I ended up paying only $150 for the court fees. It also helps if you have someone that's in law enforcement come to court with you. They work better than attorneys. |

Always go to court. Yes, the court fee is excessive but the insurance points carried over three years are more expensive. Also, Rt 22 is subject to the new nonsense of double fines for it being an excessive accident zone. Instead of fixing the road, just double the fines. JC |

Also, donate to the PBA and display your placard prominently. It may prevent the whole problem in the first place. J.B. "Okay, I'm going to give you a warning..." |
