Notify animal control in Maplewood, Millburn and Union. Notify police departments in these towns. Notify Jersey Animal Coalition 973-763-7322 or info@jaconline.org. Put a "found" ad on www.petfinder.com. Notify local veterinarians. Hope the owner comes forward, and then give him/her a lecture on not letting a dog run loose and to make a serious effort in avoiding accidental running loose if that is the case.

Please make sure whoever takes the dog has it scanned for a chip. My cat refused to wear a collar. Has almost choked herself to death more then once trying to get them off. After more then our share of scares, the vet recommended we not bother with a collar. My concern was what if she got out of the house? He told us not to worry, as she has a microchip. Hopefully the dog you found has one.

There are these types of collars that I've used on both my dogs and cats...they have an emergency spring latch on them so that if an animal gets stuck in the thicket, etc. It would pop open--kinda like the bindings on a pair of skis.
