All will agree that one of the fabulous fundamental treats of childhood (and adulthood!) is a trip to the ice cream parlor!

My 6 year old son is dangerously allergic to many things including dairy (all milk products). Not lactose intolerant, allergic. Happily, he has been able to share this basic treat with other people because the Maplewood Ice Cream Parlor has had cherry ice, the only non-dairy product we are aware they have ever had. We really need another non-dairy product to have available for people like my son who cannot eat anything that contains milk.

Recently, unfortunately, cherry ice was replaced. It was replaced by lemon ice which is too sour for my son and the loss was taken very badly; he cannot share a trip to the ice cream parlor with sister and friends and another little piece of exclusion has descended.

Michael, the owner, said customers requested the lemon flavor. He replaced the cherry ice because to replace a better selling ice cream flavor would be a hardship. He also told me he cannot find a non-dairy (soy milk, rice milk, etc..) product in three gallon tubs but that he would stock it if he could.

May I respectfully request that those of you who share our desire for a non-dairy product ask for it at the Maplewood Ice Cream Parlor? Also, please let me know here if you know of any non-dairy frozen treats available in 3 gallon tubs that Michael could obtain.

I know other people, kids and adults, who can't consume dairy; let's make it known that there are enough people who want a non-dairy product and would buy it on a regular basis.

Also, hey, if you like cherry ice, speak up!

Many thanks and be well, all.

David

Could he stock individual portions of some type of frozen desert (like the water ices that used to always come in a yellow containers)? That way he would just need some freezer space somewhere and not a spot for a 3-gallon tub. I think I have also seen things like ice cream sandwiches made with soy milk.

have you ever had Chocolate Water Ice...YUM !!! They also have Red, White & Blue tubs in NYC - probably Lemon, Cherry & Blueberry, maybe you can ask them to look into that combo.

We just went to Rita's for ices last night. Large selection of flavors; Gelati too. It's located on Stuyvesant Ave in Union (near the 7-11)

Haven't you had problems with the same scoop used for dairy & the ice? even though they wash it off in the water bin, there has to be a slight amount of dairy protein that would cling to it. I know another child who is highly allergic to dairy told me they would never take her to an ice cream store even for ices. (they have a kosher restaurant near them in Long Island which is where they go out to dinner - don't know if there's an option like that around here.)

we also really like Rita's on Stuyvesant though have not been there this year yet. As a parent of two very allergic kids I will definitely stop in to the Ice Cream Parlor and vote for cherry ice!
