Hi all,

I'm looking for a place to get my oil changed before my road trip on Friday morning - just need someplace, preferably in Maplewood, where I can just show up after work this week and it doesn't cost too much. Any suggestions?

Also, I have two bridesmaids dresses to get altered - yes, I'm popular this summer. They need to be quite significantly taken in, and I'm nervous about taking them just anywhere. Can anyone offer up a suggestion for that as well - also someplace not to $$, where I can walk in after work this week.

Thanks!

Can't help on the oil change, but for the dresses, call Hediye - she posts here under 'The Gifted Thimble'. She does amazing work.

Since you are talking the evening I think you have to go to one of the chains such as JiffyLube on SA at Vauxhall or Grease Monkey on SA near Yale.

Can't help with teh alterations.

Grease Monkey on Morris Ave. at Millburn. Not sure how late they're open, but quick & reliable. just don't let them upsell you anything like an air filter or whatever they're pushing this month. they also vacuum the car and top off all the fluids. (FWIW, a friend had a very bad experience at that Jiffy Lube--severe car damage, and he ended up sueing--and winning).

Good to know, ril. Usually my dad handles the changing of the oil for me but time is of the essence this time around. Will check into Grease Monkey.

I agree on Jiffy Lube. Stay away. After my last experience, they ended up sending me a check for $500.

Although, it was kind of priceless when one of the guys asked me (quite seriously) if I had brought in the part that they'd forgotten to screw back in, which then fell off in the express lane of 78.

I seem to recall that, when I was done laughing, I gave him the mile marker and told him to go get it.

Can you drop off your car in the morning and pick it up after work? Toomey's in Maplewood is great for an oil change if you commute by train. I think they close around 5 though.

Re Toomey's--they always have a way that you can pick up your car later than 5. Just depends on what you arrange.

That sounds great, KRNL. I didn't even think of that - I'll look into it.

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions - will also call Hediye today.

Ridge Tire (by the train in SO) will do the same--they lock the keys inside the car, and I use an extra set when I need to pick it up after they're closed. You can also drop off the car before they're open--they have a drop slot for the keys. A bit more expensive than Grease Monkey (and no vacuuming) but more convenient.
