We've been invited to a graduation party thrown by one of my co-workers for her 2 daughters, one graduating from 8th grade & the other from high school. I planned on either giving cash or gift certificates & then got to thinking whether we should give a gift of equal value to each girl or whether we should give more to the high school senior. Any thoughts?

I think giving more to the high school senior is entirely appropriate, both because the high school graduation is a more significant milestone and because I'd probably generally give more to an 18 year old than I would to a 14 year old (for their birthdays, for example).

Give equal amounts of cash or gift certs, but to the HS grad, also give a hard cover edition of "Oh, The Places You'll Go" by Dr. Seuss and write a nice sentiment inside the cover. This book should be required reading for anyone starting "Life, 101"!

How sad. I can't believe the 8th grade "graduate" and the high school graduate are sharing a party! IMHO, the only graduate is the high school graduate - the other is merely advancing another grade. Must be my upstate NY upbringing - no one ever "graduated" until they received an actual DIPLOMA or DEGREE after successfully completing 12th grade and/or college.

If it were me, I'd give a small token gift to the to-be 9th grader and a much more meaningful gift for the graduate who has truly accomplished something major.
