I have been taking a class in Brooklyn on how to convert a diesel to run on vegetable oil. I would love to find one and convert it. The thought of not being beholden to the oil companies is very pleasing.

Aha, another identity revealed. He'd rather sell the 83 than the 68, but make an offer and we'll see... I usually get what I want (or get RID OF what I want)...

The plan is great. Then comes the hard part. In order to get the volume of veg. oil to run, you are going to go to several restaurants to collect their oil. A diner disgards about 5-10 gallons of used oil every week, usually on Fridays for some reason. (sidebar- order your (french) freedom fries on Saturday.) Are you going to be reliable to continuously collect the material? The diner wants it out of there, pronto. It is dirty and smelly. Usually there is spillage when it goes from the friolator into the container. When you pick up the container, oil gets on you and will get on/into your truck. Anyway. How many restaurants do you have to visit to get enough oil to power your car for a week? Secondly, you are competing with rendering companies for the commodity. To keep in business, they will pay for the oil if they so need. Eight years ago, they were paying $28.00 per 50 gallon drum. At present, they to not pay. By the way, such grease is a commodity on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. Wall Street Journal, #2 brown grease. For an investment of a couple of thousand, you can hedge your bet. Thirdly, you will soon be competing with other diesel owners for the by-product. They also may be willing to pay the diner owner. It costs about .70 per gallon to buy chemicals to convert the oil to fuel. How much are you willing to pay the diner owner if you have to? Processing equipment seems to run about $1,200. Are you sure you want to do this?

You don't need any chemicals to turn the used oil into fuel. There are several manufacturers who make kits to run diesels on pure veg oil. The need to convert to "BioDiesel" is a myth. All you need to do is filter the oil down to a few microns. The only extra thing that Marshall will have to do is have a special tank in this car, with a heating element to make sure the veg oil is thinned out completely. IF he comes across any hydrogenated oil it can clog up the system unless its heated before hand. Also he'll have to run pure diesel when he starts and right before he shuts down the engine. Its not as hard as most people think. www.greasel.com www.greasecar.com

The original diesel engine designed by Rudolf Diesel was made to run on peanut oil. If I went to Costco and bought new soy oil it would cost me 2.50 a gallon. I don't think the current prices of gas are going to go down. Another thought is the oil produces 30 to 40% fewer hydrocorbons, 20 to 50% less smoke and up to 52% fewer oxides of Nitrogen. The way I see it this is a win win situation, If getting a little oil on me can help our environment, I really don't mind. |

Instead of buying at Costco, look for wholesalers who will deliver in 50 gallon drums. Check the prices of flaxseed, soy and cottonseed oil along with peanut oil and corn oil. |
