Need to rent a truck, probably with an electric liftgate...is UHaul the way to go or are there other choices?

Thanks.

BTW, UHaul seems very expensive...cheap initial rate of $30 or $40 and then.....$2.49 a mile!!

So....any ideas gratefully accepted.

We rented from Ryder years ago, but I can't remember the cost. While not what you appear to need, Entersprise rents full size cargo vans for $19.95 per day with no mileage charges as long as you stay in New Jersey.

I know UHaul rents the type of vehicle you want from their location down on Newark Way. We rented a van from them before I figured out about Enterprise.

I like Penske trucks personally, and have just recently rented one from the location on Rt 22. I do not at all like the way that U-Haul does business.

Enterprise is good but the largest you can get is a cargo van or pickup truck, which doesn't sound large enough for your needs.

Avis rents trucks at the Sears Automotive Center at the Livingston Mall. Excellent prices, no fuss, no muss. We had a very good experience there renting a van. (And, BTW, had the opposite experience at U-Haul on Newark Way.)

Hi all and thank you.

wnb, Lixouri: What did you not like about UHaul? What exactly were your experiences if you'd like to relate?

Last time I tried to book with them, I made the reservation to pick up in Maplewood, the day before I was to pick up, I get a call confirming pickup from a guy in "North Newark." Oh they don't have that kind of truck at Maplewood, I'm close to you! I check Mapquest and it's 10 miles to drive there. That's 20 miles round trip at $2.49 a mile, $49.80 on top of the $19.99 base price just to pick it up and return it. Add to that the miles I'm actually putting on the thing to do the work. Then add to that the fact that I'm scheduled to do this tomorrow and just finding out about this switcheroo.

Finally, get told by the guy in North Newark that I need to call the customer service 800 number to cancel if I want to cancel. You can't cancel from the web site or through the local guy. Sit on hold for an hour waiting for someone to take my cancellation order. Had to do it because they say they charge $50 for no-shows and they already had my CC info.

The whole thing resulted in my potentially not being able to do the hauling I needed to do the next day, and would have had to postpone the initiative. However, I was able to go to Home Depot that day and rent one of their trucks for an hour and get the job done.

I've always had confusion with them switching the equipment or the location or that kind of stuff, which has annoyed me. I don't have a problem with the guy in Maplewood at all, just the corporate U-Haul experience has usually been confusing and not very customer-friendly. Add to that the fact they're not that cheap at all, and I've tended to look elsewhere. It's not like I rent trucks that often but I've always had very good experience with Penske, quality trucks and no hassles.

You can drive right past it without seeing it.

Dollar Rent-A-Car
2735 Route 22 West
Union, NJ 07083

If you know where Springfield Rd intersects Rt 22, go that way and hop on 22 and it will be on your right before that little undeveloped section where there are trees. Roughly on the other side of 22 from Target.

We rented a Budget truck to move some odd sized and fragile furniture last week.
It was at Rick's Sunoco Station at 1459 Springfield Ave, next to the Maplewood Diner.

They had several choices, and we even got it for a Sunday, which worked for us.

Used Penske at Dollar franchise near TravelLodge on 22 WB. Good experience, clean 18' truck, liftgate, A/C, cassette/radio, easy to drive.

Thanks.

Depending on who is on duty and when you go, HD may or may not be willing to rent a truck to you. Also the HD rental is for a 75-minute hour, not a full day.

I went to HD on a Saturday late morning (busy) and the woman refused to let me rent the truck for an hour because it was "for customers." So I went into the store and bought a big sheet of sheetrock for $10 that I couldn't fit in my car, and was able to rent the truck (I was in a bind as noted in my previous email). The total still came to much less than what U-Haul would have charged... in this case I really only needed the truck for about an hour. Also I have some wall/ceiling repair work to do so figured I would eventually need and use the sheetrock anyway.

Also I don't think any of the HD trucks have liftgates.

We also just rented a truck from the Dollar Rent-A-Car on RT 22. Right after TravelLodge on 22W.
