My father wants to buy me a compost bin as a housewarming gift, but we're having a hard time finding somewhere to pick one up. There are plenty of websites I could order from if I need to, but we'd prefer to buy locally if possible.

Homedepot.com and Lowes.com seemed to have no idea what I was talking about which usually means the stores won't have one in stock either, does anyone know of any garden or home store in the area that carries them?

Several years ago I purchased one from Costco. Not sure if they still stock them. Give them a call.

Call public works department, recycling coordinator.

If they don't have informaition, call Morris County Utilities Authirity and ask for Penny Jones.

If that doesn't work, google Biocycle magazine in Pennsylvania and ask them.

I have a compost bin and purchased it from a catalogue. Can't remember the name but any good garden catalogue should have it. They have the stationary kinds that just sit there and they have the kinds that you can turn with a handle.
OR just build one from 2X4's and wire mesh.

Yeah, I've seen a bunch of cool ones in catalogs and online, but I figured if there was a local business that was supporting composting then I should try and support them.

We're hesitant to build one since we've already got a rowdy gang of raccoons waiting for us to forget to bungee our trash shut some night, and I imagine that anything less than a very well sealed compost container would be too much of a temptation for them. I can see them now in little tool belts, pulling the nails out of my 2X4's....

Costco in East Hanover had compost containers in stock a few weeks back - like cats said, give them a call to see if they're still in stock. If I remember right, they were about $40, made out of sturdy plastic, and had a lid at the top for dumping fresh organic matter, and section that opened at the bottom to make it easier to retrieve the compost.
