Our parrot was out of his cage today for a treat and while my husband was out of the room, the parrot shredded a square in an afghan that my mother crocheted for us many years ago. I am heartbroken. Can anyone recommend someone who might be able to repair the afghan? Anna

Naughty parrot. Can you post a photo of the damage? There are a bunch of us needle-folk on MOL. You never know who can help... |

Was the thread damaged/broken or just unraveled? If the latter, with the correct size crochet hook for gauge, it should be relatively easy to repair the damage. If the threads are chewed or otherwise cut up, it will be a matter of finding a compatible thread (you will never get an exact match) and doing a little redesigning. Perhaps, you can mend the damaged square by taking a thread from the outer edge of the afghan and then replace that with a contrasting border in a new thread. Las is correct in saying that us needlework folks will have to see a clear image of the afghan (including a close up of the damaged section) to recommend the best way of fixing this. It would also help to know the kind of material which was used to make the afghan. Another possibility is to bring the afghan to the knitting circle at Pen and Jen's on a Saturday morning. Someone in that group should be able to recommend a solution and tell you what supplies you will need to make the repair.

Thanks Las and Joan, I'll take a photo and post it. The threads are completely shredded -- that parrot's beak is very efficient. And, the afghan was folded when he got into it, so he ruined several squares at once. Not sure about the kind of material -- I know nothing about croceting or knitting. I appreciate your suggestions, and may actually stop down at Pen and Jen's too. What time on Saturdays do you meet? Anna |

Anna: I don't belong to that group but I have seen them there many times. I think about 9:30 AM - 10:00 AM would be a good time (or stop by in advance and ask Pen or Jen for the details).
