I went outside this morning and found that all my (very) newly planted flowers had been chewed off their stems. Not only were my new flowers destroyed, but my rose bushes are completely bare! To get to the point- what can I put on my remaining plants to deter deer and other predators? They were treated with bug spray but I now know that stuff doesnt work on bigger pests. Any suggestions?? |

Google 'deer resistant plants'; somebody (or many people) have assembled such lists. |

Welcome to Maplewood. Solutions: (1) Dig up the roses and give them to someone who doesn't live anywhere near deer, (2) put up netting every night to keep them out of your yard; (3) hunting permit & shotgun. |

Go to the Vermont Country Store online. They sell deer repellent sachet bags, that you tie to whatever you want to protect. I used them last year, and am using them this year. They seem to work. You can tie them to the plant that you are trying to protect, or to a stake or a tree or something next to it. Supposedly, the effect lasts for 6 months, and they aren't affected by rain--although we've has so much rain lately, that who knows...You can also buy deer repellent spray at nurseries, but you have to re-spray after every rain, and they smell bad enough to repel people, too. |

Deer will be deterred by one repellent for as long as, well, they're deterred. Once they get used to one deterrent, it no longer deters. You're supposed to use a variety (suggested number is three) different types of deterrents (predator urine, rotten eggs, other combo sprays you can get at Home Depot, human hair, the sachets lizzyr mentions) and rotate. The only thing that works effectively "forever", and doesn't require reapplication after rain, is fencing. One would think that the thorns of roses would not be appealing, but sadly, roses are consumed happily by deer. There are a lot of deer-resistant plants (such as daffodils, aconitum, bleeding hearts, astilbe), however, so don't despair. |

They also stay away from aromatic herbs like oregano, thyme, rosemary, sage and lavender. I try to plant those in sort of a barrier around my tomato plants. |

They are brazen and fearless around here. My large and energetic dog used to chase them out of my yard at 5 AM, and they would simply saunter to the neighbor's, wait for us to turn the corner, and come back to mow down my hostas. |
