My wife and I moved to MW from Manhattan a few months ago and are planning to start a family. We are both self-employeed and both work in Manhattan. My wife also has a part-time job that is currently providing our insurance. For various reasons she needs to quit her part-time job and so we are trying to figure out our insurance options. I looked into individual insurance for families In NJ and OUCH!!!! 1-3k per month. I understand that she should be able to keep the insurance through COBRA for at least 18 months. But still wondering what we would do after that. Also from my research I understand that you can qualify for group plans in NY as a Sole-Proprietor, with no employees. Unlike NJ where you have to pay SS taxes on at least one part-time employee to qualify. In NY do you have to be a registered company (with tax ID, etc..)? Or just having an office enough? Anybody else with this experience? Advice, etc... Thanks.

J, Rich and I are in the same position. Our Cobra runs out end of this year. We are self employed as well. We have done alot of research on this and unfortunately in NJ you are limited to only a few choices. All those wonderful offers for low cost health insurance always say on the bottom "not available in NJ". I have a file of records from my research. You can call me 973.763.4726 and you can look at the info in my file. |

Working Today's Freelancers Union may work for your family. If you have one or more client(s) in NY State and you have a contract agreement in effect for six or eight weeks- Look no further than the Freelancers Union. I’ve spoken to reps on three occasions (under the check, double check, and check once more rule) and have been assured that once I’ve secured a client (NY registered), I’d have no difficulty obtaining insurance through the Freelancers Union- still waiting on that client. One of your clients will need to fill out a form. Rates and forms are on their site. The site is www.workingtoday.org check out health insurance under the 2nd (premium) option.

Parker--thanks for the tip on Freelancer's union. J--I'm in the same boat, self employed. There are Associations you can join to become part of a group plan. I joined AIVF.org (Assoc of Ind. Video & Filmakers) no membership requirements other than nominal fee. Through them I get Cigna insurance, not cheap at all, but lots of docs in their network. Actually, the AIVF membership (and many other organizations) qualify you for insurance through TEIGIT.org, that's where you can find info on the Cigna plan for NJ. My premium is approaching 1500/month, good insurance, but when I have some time I'm going to explore the much less expensive Freelancers Union stuff. Hope we can share info through this board! I'm also very interested in the HSA concept, which I'm not sure is available in NJ. But I see it offered through Freelancers Union/Perfect Health and hope to check it out.
