Anyone know for sure -- if I go tonight for a replacement phot license -- will it be issued on the spot? Was going to go to the Springfield DMV. Pete |

Yes, it will, but you need to supply ample identification -- preferably a birth certificate or passport, plus your old license, and some sort of proof of residence (like a utility bill). I just did this last week, and I was in and out within an hour. They were very pleasant, also. Btw, I went to the one in Irvington, just off of Springfield Avenue. |

I went to the sprinfield DMV last Friday to re-register a couple of our cars and while I was there figured I'd apply for a new license. I made sure I had the proper ID and like ess I was in and out in about an hour with new registrations and license in hand. I was pleasantly surprised at how helpful they were. |

VERY IMPORTANT: Do you need the photo taken????? Newark and Paramus (i think it's Paramus) are the only places that take new photos in our area. (This fact as of December 2005). Newark DMV is quite a pit, but you might want to just head there so you know you can get what you need. |

That's not right, Shanabana. I've had my picture taken at the DMV office in East Orange. The Wayne office certainly does it (but it's the busiest DMV office in the entire system). I would imagine all offices would do photos, since NJ requires the photo license now and no longer issues the plain paper renewals. |

Ummm, I had a new photo taken for my new license last Friday at the springfield DMV. As a side note I was amazed at how many people asked to have their pictures re-taken. Its a driver's license for crying out loud. |

I would avoid the East Orange DMV like the plague. When I was there they were issuing (handwritten) numbers but were then calling people based on the order they were sitting (even though a group of people were asked to move to new seats accomodate me and my stroller). They can take a photo but they're not equipped to do everything, so if you need anything "complicated" like a vision test they're going to send you elsewhere anyway. It's a complete dump, and it seems like that's where they send the bad employees to punish them. The Wayne DMV has lots of helpful people as well as ample parking. I've been there a few times in the past few months for my license and my partner's and even during their late evening hours they keep things moving. They have sort of a triage system where an employee goes through all your stuff in the waiting area to make sure that you have all your id and paperwork together. The benefit of this is that if you're ready ahead of someone with a lower number who needs more attention, they'll let you get on line ahead of them rather than making you wait. The day I was there I had to finish getting my license (since East Orange could basically do nothing more than take my photo) and register two cars, and the workers were so friendly and took care of everything at once rather than making me get on and wait in multiple lines to do different things. |

I got my photo license at Springfield and it took 22 minutes -- yes i timed from the minute I walked in the door. Check the credentials you have against the requirements posted on the N.J.D.M.V. web site, nj.gov Good luck, it shouldn't be too bad. JC |

By Springfield you all mean Irvington, right? Unless there actually is a Springfield one? Anyway - the one on Washington Street, off of Springfield Avenue, does take pictures. Btw, Sportsnut, I had my photo retaken. The first shot showed me with my eyes closed, which is not acceptable for a driver's license. It's not all about vanity (partially, but not totally). |

DMV "Springfield" -- 34 Center St, Springfield (right off of Springfield Ave, parking much easier than in the Irvington DMV) /p |

Pete, I think you mean it's off of Morris, not Sprinfield. But as long as you know where you're going. Just double check the website for all of the now very required documents. Yes, the Springfield DMV is normally quite painless in addition to being quite close. |

If you are on Springfield Ave in Maplewood, head toward Springfield, crossing Rt 78, etc., turn right on Morris Avenue, go through two traffic lights and then take the very next left and you will see the DMV on your right about a block down with parking lot on your left. Sorry, I don't know the street names, but it is just past the Foodtown. (I think you can see it from the Foodtown parking lot, actually.) |

I renewed my license (with photo) in East Orange about two weeks ago. They made us move from chair to chair a few different times to keep track of whose turn it was, but then it turned out that we got bumped to the end of the line because their "policy" is to bump senior citizens to the front of the line. They said they want to minimize the chances of the senior citizens getting mugged (in a wide open room?), never mind that we were late to work |

Follow up -- got to the Springfield DMV about 5 pm, was out by 5:30 -- license with picture in hand. As jab noted, they were *very* particular about which chairs you sit in... (4 specific waiting areas depending on what part of the process...) Anyway, went very well -- thanks for the help and info. (and I witnessed a older woman absolutely irate that they would not renew her license without the "6 points" of id or whatever it is. "I own a house, I pay my taxes, and I can't renew my license!", and a middle aged woman trying every bill she had - pharmacy, etc. to "prove residency" -- they turned her down) tip -- be sure your docs are in order... Note for anyone who's short on documents - I almost lost my mind trying to come up with the documentation, but as it turns out the DMV notice for renewal itself counts as correspondence from a govt agency (I think for proof of residence). The DMV visit itself was relatively painless - went into the Wayne office on a Mon eve about 20 minutes before closing, expecting the worst, but was out in less than an hour with the new license. Don't ask about the picture. |
