Hi, I am moving to SO and have a child who will be 3 in september. Can you give me your ideas and thoughts about the available nursery schools in the local area? Thanks

I am a proud graduate of The Wee Folk Nursery School in Short Hills. I even have a diploma on my wall. I don't know if it is still there, however.

Another in Short Hills, if still there, is Far Brook School.pic

I'm not sure if Playhouse in West Orange has any spots for that age open, but my daughter has had a great two years there. http://www.playhouseonline.org

Wendyn has compiled a list that she's posted on the board several times. I did a search and found it for you:

"[H]ere part of a list I compiled with part time and/or half day local preschools in alphabetical order. I've tried to list websites or phone numbers where I have them. My kids are at the Y so I have no first hand experience with any of these. My friends like Hedwig Gruenewald, Open Door, St. Stephens (although they use the full time program) and Far Brook (which is very pricey). I've heard great things on MOL about Morrow, Playhouse and Prospect.

Good luck!

We LOVE Mickey Fried School at Oheb Shalom, as does our almost three year old. We signed up for summer session and re-upped for next year.

Since most schools did enrollments for this fall a few months ago, you are likely to encounter waiting lists. But don't let that discourage you too much. If you don't immediately find a space at a school you like, get on a few of those lists. With patience and, in some cases, some flexibility on your part about which class you take (AM vs PM, 2-day vs 3-day, etc.), you will likely get a space at a school that suits your child's and your needs.

Good luck!

Alexis--it also depends on what you are looking for. Full-time? Part-time? Half-days? There are a variety of different schools....that may help narrow your search if you give us an idea.

My 5 year old just graduated from Weekday and his brother will be in the 3 year old program next fall. Its a small cooperative with kind caring teachers who really work with parents to make sure the children get the most out of the school. Its definitely worth getting on a wait list there.

My older daughter went to the South Mountain Y and had a very good experience (especially if you can get Miss Jean for the four and five year old years). The Y is great for working parents because they can accomodate children for long hours and they are hardly ever closed for vacation. St. Stephens, on the other hand, follows the Millburn school schedule, which can be hard for working parents since there are so many days off.

My two little ones go to Temple Beth Ahm in Springfield. It's a small program and the teachers are loving, energetic and fun. I think they might have openings for three year olds.
