Hi all, I'm looking for a good OB in the area as I recently learned I'm pregnant! I'd like someone who's warm and open to questions. Also, we may want to do hypnobirthing and/or work with a doula as well, so any recommendations for those would be appreciated as well. Thanks so much! |

MW congratulations!! If you do a search you should be able to find alot of information about this. Unfortunately I was not happy with either of my OB/GYN so I am of no help! |

Congrats. I had our son at St. Barnabas in March 05, and was, like you, pregnant and new to Maplewood in summer 04. I can recommend Drs. David, Kaufman and Ciciola in West Orange. Great practice all around. Good luck.

I have no first-hand experience, but I've heard/read great things about our very own MOLer, doulamomma. She has an ad that is in that rotation that flashes across the top of MOL. Congrats! |

Thanks for the congrats! We're excited! And thanks for the feedback. I did do a few searches but the most recent were from 2004, so it's helpful to have a few more recent thoughts. |

I used midwives in Denville and they were great. although, one has left the practice, so i don't know what they are doing now. I can also highly recommend Doulamomma (and that's from personal experience)! you can PL me for more info if you want. |

congrats mwnewbie! i just gave birth 12 weeks ago using avalon midwives (in west caldwell) and can't recommend joanne yates enough. i believe i would have had a c-section anywhere else (due to some complications). but joanne's patience and committment to a vaginal birth saved me and my son the surgery. they deliver at mountainside in montclair, which offers a birthing pool and private rooms for everyone. i also used kim collins (doula momma) and she rocked more than i can say. it's definitely worth meet with them both to see if they click with you. i had the best team to support me and my family through a life-changing experience of my life. and i wish you the same. |

I also was going to recomend the avalon midwives. I ended up having to be transferred to an OB due to complications (and their ob's didn't want them allowing me to vbac) BUT they were still great. JoAnne also works as an L&D nurse and was on shift during my labor. When Donna found out that I was headed for another section, she came in to be with me even though she was no longer the care provider. She made sure the baby was brought to me in recovery and was just awesome! Now, I am with Dr. Russo in Livington. I really like him so far and he came with great recomendations. Can't say how he would be re: more natural births as I will be having another section. But he is kind and caring and so far has listened when I needed him too. He delivers at St. Barnabas and may also deliver at Overlook. Many complain about St. B's, but I had a fine experience there with my first. Good Luck! |

I, too, am with Dr. Russo, and liked all the doctors in the practice. I had an emergency section with lots of complications and all went fine. Dr Russo is also in practice with two women, Dr. Lo (who did my section) and is highly recommended on this board and Dr. Hamilton, who gets lots of praise from people here as well. Dr. Simonetti delivered my first when he was on emergency call from my practice, so I didn't know him, but he did ok under alot of pressure (there were 5 other women giving birth at the same time). For some reason I seem to like good looking Italian gynocologists - go figure..... |

Thanks again for all the feedback! I spoke w/Kim (doulamomma), and my husband and I are excited to be meeting with her soon. She's already generously answered lots of questions. From what I've read/heard, it sounds like Overlook or Mountainside Hospitals are probably the best fit for us. I haven't seen as much on OB's who deliver at Mountainside. Any recommendations for female OB's through there? Also, does anyone know of any local messageboards specific to new moms? Thanks! |

Congrats, Newbie, & good luck!!!!! Once the baby arrives you should definitely join the local chapter of Mothers & More -- they saved my sanity when babycat was born! First thing you'll want to do is go to their New Moms' Coffee (every Tuesday at The Goat Cafe in South Orange) where you'll meet lots of nice moms with babies under one; we made some really great friends there. As for the virtual world, they also have an active e-loop that's a great source of information for all things parenting-related. |

I know you asked for a woman but I really liked Mark Fisher who delivers at mountainside. Very supportive of my attempt at a VBAC next time. Only reason I changed to Dr. Russo was that I know I'm having another section and St. B's and Russo are just so much more convenient for me. Dr. Fisher's number is 973-655-9050. He is a very sweet, kind soft spoken man who really allowed me to be part of the decision making all through my labor.
