I was pruning my rhodadendrons today and was surprised to find a birds nest in one. I immediately stopped pruning and the birds were going NUTS. I walked away and tried to leave them alone, but I did still place a sprinkler under the rhodie to water it. Now, there's no sign of any bird activity in the nest. I don't hear any hungry babies cheeping. I think eggs would be hatched by now. Do you think I contaminated it with my human activity? Shouldn't the birds be there at night? Can I go back to pruning tomorrow if the nest seems abandoned? Anyone know about this kind of stuff? J.B. I'm kind of psyched that birds built a nest in these bushes. I planted them myself. So I don't want to ruin it. |

If you didn't actually touch or disturb the nest, I can't imagine they would have abandoned it. Some eggs may have hatched already, some may not have been laid yet. I think it depends on the type of bird. |

Okay, I know I just posted that, but I'm sitting outside and right when I hit post, I saw a robin flying back to the nest. Mrs. J.B. says it's the male. She's asking if that's the one who brings food, or who's supposed to kill the babies when they've been contaminated. I think everything's alright, but intelligent input would be appreciated. I'm almost certain it is a common misperception that the babies will be abandoned after human contact. Not to mention, you didn't say you actually touched them, so in point of fact, there was no actual "human contact." As far as Robins are concerned, I've seen plenty of babies already fledged and following mom and dad around screaming for food, so I think if what you have is a Robin's nest, the babies are already out. Also, once the babies are hatched, I believe for most species of birds it's both the mom and the dad who feed. Those little birdies need lots of worms and it takes both parents to keep them satisfied. Relax J.B. I really don't think you've done any harm. |

JB, it just rained for an entire week. Why were you watering your rhodie? |

After I prune, I feel bad. I water to make it up to them. (The plants.) J.B. Mrs. J.B. has LOTS of new information about robins. SHE searched instead of posting and this is what we've learned: Robins have two to three broods per season. The male feeds while the mother makes another nest. Also, the robins take the egg shells out of the nest and drop them a safe distance from the nest so that predators don't come around to eat their young. (We found some shells and suspected the worst.) So, Mrs. J.B. has concluded that our nest is either OBVIOUSLY active with baby robins, or a female robin building her second, or third, nest. |

You would have to pick them up and handle them but even then birds don't really mind that. I have even taken a slightly injured baby in when it was in shock from falling from the nest. I found it in the parking lot and after a couple of days and with some vet care the little guy was fine. When I put him bak in the nest I marked the top of his head with non toxic marker and kept an eye on him/her. Mommy bird never minded and neither did his siblings. |

I put one of them in my mouth, but I forgot to mark it with a non-toxic marker. J.B. |
