I've just heard that a large plot of land is being cleared in East Hanover. I recall a year or so ago that Wegmans were planning to open up a supermarket there, but the local residents objected. Does anyone know if Wegmans succeeded? It's the most fantastic supermarket chain in the USA and sadly the nearest ones are in Bridgewater or just off the Garden State Parkway (near Menlo park? I've been to it but can't remember exactly where it is http://www.wegmans.com/ (For anyone whom is familiar with British supermarkets, Wegmans is like a cross between Tesco's and Waitrose....although unlike the UK stores Wegmans doesn't sell clothes, electronics, DVDs etc, just basically food in the main). |

Deeper into that website there's a listing of future Wegman's locations. While East Hanover was on it at one point, it's no longer there. http://www.wegmans.com/news/flash/futureStores.asp |

Wegmans are awesome, Talking about British supermarkets, I would LOVE to see a Tescos, Sainsburys, or even a Waitrose open here. I doubt it will happen though. Mind you, I thought I read that one of them opened up some kind of store on the west coast - I need to check it out again... |

According to the Star Ledger and posts here on MOL the East Hanover Planning Board and Town Council turned down the needed variances because of traffic concerns. This was, from memory, earlier this year. NIMBY is alive and well. |

Soparents - yes, I believe you read right - Tesco are planning on opening up a range of smaller 'express' shops on the West Coast. Whenever we get back to the UK (pretty much once a year these days - all my friends are getting married off, so we have lots of weddings to attend!), I always do a shop for the essentials at my old local Tesco Extra (in Pitsea, Essex) a couple of towns over from my parents, and wish for something like that near here. That said, my wife is now happy that Target are starting to stock some of the Boots line of products... Jason |

I would be in heaven if Wegman's opened in East Hanover. I'm on route 10 at least once a week anyway. We make the trek to the woodbridge store every month or so because my kids love the childcare room. I love the produce and shopping un-kid-encumbered. Last week we even at dinner there and the chinese food buffet was pretty ok. Some people have do issues with Wegman's and its business practices (think Walmart). As an upstate NY girl though, going to wegman's feels like going home. |

... Stew Leonard's is another grocery store chain (well, all of three stores I would love to see in New Jersey. My wife and I used to shop at their store in Yonkers when we lived in the North Bronx - great fresh produce and meats, at a good price. Jason |

BobK is right, the EH Planning Board rejected the Wegmans application back in 2004 and I can see why. The site was the old Varityper plant on old Mt. Pleasant Ave right near where it forks off from route 10 eastbound, IOW near the Burger King. The traffic there is already atrocious, and Mt. Pleasant is not a big road. Don't get me wrong, if they had approved it I would be wading through that traffic to get to the store, but I have to think there's a better location for it. Still, it's interesting that there's no supermarket between the Pathmark on the Livingston Circle and the Pathmark almost all the way to 287. |

Actually I thought it was some of the CVS stores which are stocking Boots items....unfortunately not in this area as far as I know, but I spotted some Boots stuff in the CVS on the strip in Las Vegas and I know an expat living in New Haven, CT and some Boots items are stocked in her local CVS. They're certainly expanding in the US as they're recruiting here: http://www.boots.com/ As for Target, they stock the Rimmel cosmetics, but you can get Rimmel in Walgreens and Harmon (opposite Bed Bath & Beyond in Short Hills/Springfield, plus the fab Charles Worthington hair care products (except for Target). I miss Boots...I'm still astonished at how grotty the Duane Reade stores look in New York and it's a definite turn-off for buying any products there. (Oddly enough, Boots actually has a couple of branches in Bangkok and they even do the '3 for the price of 2' offers...wish the stores did that here. However, the Boots store next to the Patpong night market and red light district is particularly busy....guess their biggest seller is condoms LOL!) |

Ooooh....I was wrong! I've now looked at the Boots site for the US (Boots.com not Boots.co.uk) and on the page with the map it does state that Target as well as CVS stocks their products. Unfortunately when I clicked on the map for NJ it says that "we're sorry but we do not currently have any stores in this area". I'm going to the 'contact us' section and will beg them to get their products into Target/CVS in our area! |

Here's the info from my wife: The Target in East Hanover has some of the Boots' Sanctuary products, but it is a limited range right now. When I was working out in California at the end of last year, the local Targets in San Jose/Cupertino have an entire Boots aisle! It looks like they have stores in New York and Connecticut listed on that website, so I wouldn't think it would be long until they hit New Jersey.

By the way I contacted the UK supermarket that opened on the West coast - they said they had "no plans to open anything on the east coast at this time". Except for the Montclair shop and Kings odd products where else can we satisfy our cravings? I'm just munching my last hobnob now. Yummy!

You can get some British style biscuits - Rich Tea, Digestive, Shortcake, and others - from Kam Man Food on Route 10 in East Hanover. This is in the strip mall next to Home Depot. You can also get Ribena, Lucozade, and Horlicks from them for a pretty reasonable price. As for Hob Nobs, you can definitely get these from the London Food Company in Montclair (http://www.londonfoodco.com/). Jason |

Meyers of Keswick in the city on Hudson Street between 12th and 13th streets. They got alot of selection for a modest sized shop, including >>YUCK!!!<< blood pudding. I remember being psyched to be able to get Tizer and Irn Bru there. |

The London Food Company/Hobnobs is the one and only reason I ever go to Montclair. Just was hoping there might be somewhere on my more usual routes to get hobnobs. Oh well - a friend is flying in next week so I guess I can wait til then for my chocolate hobnob fix!!!! |

And of course you can get 'proper' fish and chips from 'A Salt and Battery' in NYC at 2 locations: http://www.asaltandbattery.com (and they even do curry sauce to pour on your chips and it's delish!) and Myer's of Keswick: http://www.myersofkeswick.com/main.asp (it's blooming expensive though!) and I found an interesting place last week (which will also appeal to Aussie and Kiwi expats)....'The Tuck Shop' The one I went to is inside a cybercafe on 49th St between 8th Ave and Broadway (a few doors down from where Sweeney Todd is performing and opposite the theatre where 'Chicago' is staged). You can get various meat pies eg. steak and beer, chook (chicken), chook curry, veggie etc. and sausage rolls. I had the 'tucker box' $10 special: meat pie (steak, mushroom and horseradish) with salad, slice of Lamington cake (sponge cake rolled in jam, coconut and chocolate) and a soda. Great stuff! They will even part-bake pies for you at their downtown location so you can take them home and cook them...they're a decent size too. Just how many other Brits live around this area? There must be lots but I never seem to bump into many of them! |

Myers of Keswick has some great stuff. Also, in my old neighborhood of Park Slope, in Brooklyn, there is the Chip Shop (www.chipshopnyc.com) which does great fish'n'chips, as well as a good curry. I just heard the other day about this British Tea Room + Restaurant over in Boonton - Upper Crust - haven't been there yet, but I have been meaning to pay it a visit: http://www.uppercrustnj.com/ And yes, Miss L Toe, I think there's a bunch of us brits around here. I usually notice it most when I'm off in my own world in the grocery store, and then pick up on someone with a decidedly British accent (well, I guess I should say one of the regional dialects ) |

For all you Brits out there, or anglophiles, have any of you been over to the "London Food Company" in Montclair? She has a lot of the stuff that we miss, and if there is something she hasn't got there, she will try and order if for you if possible. They are on Bloomfield Ave, No. 416, phone No. 973 783 6688...

Jason....I've been to the Chip Shop in Park Slope too - didn't like their curry sauce at all with my chips.....far too sweet LOL! I have some Aussie expat friends living in Boonton and they arranged for their daughter to have a birthday 'tea party' with her schoolfriends (all aged about 7). They had major problems with the owners of 'Upper Crust' - I've forgotten the details but can find out if you wish, but it did include them being about to be majorly ripped off - and were so upset by the proprietor's attitude that they said they will never darken their doorstep again and suggest to their friends that it's not a nice place to go to. I've been to Sally Lunn's in Chester a few times, as well as their Princeton location. It's ok, all rather 'twee' and very expensive to have an afternoon tea (if you include the tiny finger sandwiches, scones etc.) but sometimes you get the urge to have a semblance of a taste of home without having to do it yourself LOL! Hey...Jason or SoParents....you weren't round Jenny and Mike's last Saturday morning watching the England match were you? I have a feeling that I've met SoParents at least around here! |

I was at Bunny's as well with my wife - not knowing that I was in the vicinity of other MOLers (but that's a topic for a different discussion!). Actually, I did notice a car in the parking lot around the corner with an 'MOL' sticker on it - I wonder who that was!? Miss L Toe - I'm sorry to hear about your friend's experience at Upper Crust. Maybe if you hear more about it, you could private line me. I have some friends in Boonton Township (one of whom is a brit) who have been to the place a number of times, who had nothing but positive things to say. And, as far as the curry sauce goes from Chip Shop - I must admit, I never tried it! I had one of their Baltis, which wasn't bad (although, seeing that I went to university in Birmingham (aka the home of the Balti), I have pretty high standards ) Btw - one more thing on the 'buying English food' topic (oops... I guess we have serious thread drift here ;) ) - the Indian cash'n'carries on Oak Tree Road in Edison (near my office) stock some British foods. They usually do a pretty mean deal on Heinz Baked Beans - $1.29/can last time I was there - much better than the $2+/can that a lot of other places want. Jason |

There is an Irish food shop, called the Butcher Block, in Sunnyside, Queens. It only takes about 45-50 min to get there if you go early on a Sat or Sun. It's an actual grocery store with 2/3 Irish/English products & a full butcher. They have the best sausages-- we make semi-regular trips and stock up. They have every imaginable type of biscuit, bread, soup, chocolate, etc. Granted-- it's Irish & not English, but definitely worth a mention. We supplement with the English shop in Montclair.... |
