SoOrlady, Thanks - what a cool place! However, they are definitely looking for something distinctly New England/Amercan though. |

mem... have them check out the Highland Lodge in Greensboro VT. While the Trapp Family Lodge is wonderful...I have lunch there about everytime I go to Greensboro. The Highland Lodge is simply beautiful. A short drive to Stowe for shopping, but secluded and with miles of cross country skiing trails, snowmobile trails and Ice Fishing. Nice lodge with fireplace and really good food. Higland Lodge Web Site I would also recommend the Inn on the Common in Craftsbury, just north of Greensboro, a favorite of Joel Grey and other celebs. here is the web site The Inn on the Common used to be owned by very good friends of ours and while it is not a Hotel with a Lodge, it was sold to some very cool people who instantly became a part of our community up there. Farther south in the state Woodstock Vermont has a lot to offer and I would check out the Woodstock Inn for starters or just check out Woodstock.Com I got plenty more if you want to PL me. I have been going to Vermont every summer for nearly 40 years and know quite a bit about the state. Shot my first film there. |

The Equinox in Manchester, VT. is New England par excellence. Stowe is very far north. Manchester is Southern Vermont. Very close to many ski areas...Stratton, Bromley, Magic, Snow. |

I recommend that you try the Four Chimneys Inn in Bennington. The Equinox in Manchester is also quite good. Both the Four Chimneys and the Equinox can be pricey. In addition, there are very good bed and breakfast establishments in Bennington, such as Eddington House and Henry House Inn. We have a home in North Bennington and have become quite familiar with Southwestern Vt. Bennington is about 40 miles east of Albany and nine miles north of Williamstown, Mass, itself another place you might think of. By taking the right roads out of NJ, the trip to Bennington is 3 hours 45 mins, with rest stops along the way, and is 200 miles on the dot from South Orange/Maplewood. All good roads, and not much traffic north of Albany. My objection to Manchester is that it has become the Outlet Center of the north country and at times appears a bit too commercial, but it's regarded as a jump-off spot for the key ski areas (I would avoid them like the plague at Xmas). |

The Stowe Flake or The Green Moutain Inn. both in Stowe . Ski conditions can be dicey around x-mas time in southern Vermont. |

No great inn suggestions, as we are always w/ kids & the atmosphere you describe sounds more romantic... Some thought in general: If based in Woodstock, I think the closest ski place (Suicide Six) is fairly advanced skiing...Killington & Okemo are not far though. If going to Stowe area (or anywhere in mtns, really), just check w/ inn to get route suggestions, as some road passes are closed in the winter. We have always had good luck with Killington area (& Stowe) around Christmas time, but not so much in Statton area...Killington & Okemo are in a snow belt of sorts...maybe Stowe too? The week before the holidays will be a bunch cheaper than the week of or after, which is high season. NH also has some nice places. |

Places as far south as bennington in Dec may well have snow as the machines will be working every time the temp is below 32, but the "Northeast Kingdom" is hard to beat for "New England". All the other suggestions are great, but my heart says tell em to head to Greensboro or Craftsbury or Stowe. Roads up that way are generally fine, they get so much snow they know how to deal with it. If they are renting they should get all wheel drive. BUt be reminded that that does not mean all wheel stop. |

It's not Vermont but you are guaranteed snow at Mont Tremblant north of Montreal and lots of great places to stay with fireplaces etc. |

Mem, I can highly recommend the Equinox in Manchester, though as others have posted, it can be pricey. There are many other Bed & Breakfasts in town that are equally nice, specifically the 1811 House, Inn at Willow Pond. I'll check with the misses later, I'm sure she remembers more of the places than we do, though I should, since we have a home there. Manchester is also only about 3 1/2 - 4 hours, depending on the day of the week you travel and the time of day, Stowe is at least 6-7 hours from here, if that matters. |

Stayed at the Inn at Ormsby Hill in Manchestah when we were up there in Feb. I found it to be just as nice as the Equinox, but 1/2 the price. The Equinox is lovely, but the rooms can be hit-or-miss. I've stayed in some really nice rooms there, and some not-so-nice rooms also, while still paying in the neighborhood of $500/night for all of them. |

Ormsby Hill and Equinox are both stellar, but quite different. The Equinox is a grand old hotel -- large, lots of amenities, beautiful rooms, restaurant, pub. Ormsby Hill is a quintessential high-end Vermont B&B. Quiet, gorgeous rooms with fireplaces and jacuzzis, amazing breakfast. Can't go wrong with either. Just depends on what kind of vibe you're looking for. Regardless, I'd encourage your friends to book soon. |

There are lots of great hotels, but I totally agree that The Trapp Family Lodge is something special and is beautiful at Christmas. Good to plan in advance as the rooms fill up quickly. |

Ditto the recommendation for the Woodstock Inn. I've been about 5 times. You cant' beat their humongeous fireplace in the entry foyer, and the many of the rooms have their own wood fireplaces. Excellent food, great cross-country skiing on the Inn's golf course and free skiing during the week (except perhaps it is blocked out during hoidays.) It is extremely close to several big ski mountains, but the "Suicide Six" hill is never crowded and is very family friendly. |

The family has been to the Stowe Flake http://www.stoweflake.com/ and it is amazing. The spa is great and it's only a couple of minutes away from Trapp Family Lodge. |

You could also try Bolton Valley, north of Montpelier and east of Burlington, with a number of ski resorts for downhill and x-c. There's an inn we've visited, the Black Bear Inn in Bolton Valley, which was quite nice when we stayed there a few years ago. Other visitors to the Inn have had "hit or miss" experiences, apparently. Our experience was a hit, from attentiveness on the part of the innkeepers to excellent cuisine in the dining room. We just don't go there anymore since we bought our home in southwestern Vermont and are happy as clams to traipse our neck of the woods here. |

A friend stayed at Ormsby Hill and loved it. we stayed at the Inn @ Manchester - loved it - just get the room on the top floor of the carriage house - everything else is a bit noisy (for us). |
