Recently moved to Maplewood and need some basic auto maintenance performed. Any recommendations out there in either Maplewood or South Orange? Looking for an honest mechanic who won't tell me I need new tire rods when all I need is a wheel alignment.

Thanks.

I've been very happy with Nelson's over the years. Very honest and always seem to have the car ready when promised. Once I went in declaring the clutch was shot. Instead of just agreeing with me I was later informed that it was something else (much cheaper).

They are also conveniently located right next to the train station (park side).

A friend of mine told me about Community Auto Repair on Newark Way in Maplewood. Thankfully, I haven't had the opportunity to take my car there, but would give them a shot if I were in your position. Although, its hard to compete with two refernces for a place next to the train station!!

We've recently moved to Maplewood as well. When our car got a little cranky, we took it (on recommendation) to:

Boyden Friendly Service
408 Boyden Ave
973 761 5640, ask for Tony

Outstanding service, friendly, easy to work with. I recommend him without hesitation.

Another vote for Dave at Nelson's. Great guy, very honest, doesn't try to overcharge or do more than what's needed. Also, if you take the train to work, it couldn't be more convenient. There have been numerous times my husband has come home very much "after hours," and Dave just leaves the keys so he can take the car, and trusts us to pay the bill. Great down-home, small-town, old-fashioned, reliable and honest business.

Whenever this question comes up, I always recommend Bernie's Motors on Millburn Avenue. I think it's in Millburn, or it may actually be in Maplewood -- just a few blocks up from Valley Street.

We've taken numerous ars there for repair for years. BJ, the owner (who took over when his dad Bernie died earlier this year) is as honest and reliable as can be. They are great diagnosticians; the work is excellent; pricing is very fair; and you can be 100% sure you are not being ripped off (if they can't figure out what's wrong, which is not typical), they won't charge you. Check it out once -- you'll never go anywhere else again. Our local family and friends all go there too. I can't say enough good things about Bernie's.

Phone number is 973-763-4432.

Another vote for Bernie's. We had our cars in this week for some routine maintenance.

Haven't had to use them for anything other than routine maintenace, but we have been really happy with what they have done.
