Forgive me if this has been asked a million times already but my search function isn't working...could anyone suggest a good therapist locally? I'd ideally like a woman, even more ideally one who has kids so she knows about what it's like to deal with this wonderful/horrible life experience...thanks in advance for any help.

Maybe if you can be a little more specific. For example, do you have insurance that would cover all or part of this? If not, then all recommendations are fine. If you have insurance and would want to utilize someone in your plan, check who is in your plan first and post names. Do you have a preference for the type of credentials/training the person would have. For example, do you prefer a psychologist over a social worker (or vice versa). Some people who practice therapy are neither. Do you want a psychiatrist for some reason? Do you prefer a counselor? How local is local. Do you just want someone who is in Maplewood/South Orange or would you be willing to drive to Short Hills, Livingston, Summit, Westfield, etc.

Michelle Zembow (spelling?) seems wonderful. She posts on this board and is quite helpful to others who are seeking advice. I believe she's a psychologist (or maybe a social worker). Other women have been suggested as well but I can't remember their names. Good luck. I'm sure you'll find the best person for you.

If Montclair is not too far, Elaine Speiler is fantastic. She doesn't take new patients all the time though, but if you connect she should be able to find a place for you.

One thought: a therapist is like a spouse. You are looking for someone you can click with, feel comfortable with and open up to. In fact, you may talk to this person about things you don't discuss with your other half or closest friend. It takes awhile to build the relationship.

So, don't get discouraged if you don't mesh with someone that other people rave about. I've had a couple friends who said "therapy doesn't work." One tried a couple people and changed his mind after he met The One.

Some therapists will give you a shorter, reduced first session to see if you are a fit for each other.
