I'm trying to determine a fair rate for a 14-year-old who will be helping me this summer with my two young children. She has experience taking care of young relatives but hasn't yet taken a babysitting class, nor does she have CPR certification. I don't plan on leaving her alone with both children, but I was hoping she'd be able to take the older one outside or to the park (across the street)while the younger one napped at home with me, and watch the younger one at the baby pool while I do swimming lessons with the older one. Any input would be appreciated.

Well, I pay the two 14-year olds I use to babysit for my 2 kids together (who are 4 and 9) $8/hour. You're not planning to leave her with your kids together, but it's still her time. To me, something in the range of $6 - 8 is fair, but you could probably hire a younger mother's helper for a fair bit less. I guess it depends on the 14-year old you use, but the ones I use are extremely responsible and very mature. I think younger mother's helpers get about $5/hour. |
