In b/w 2 sizes of a linen shirt. I've heard that linen shrinks either upon dry cleaning or washing. Is that true? If so, does it shrink in length or width?

Thanks.

It shrinks, gets misshapen and all wrinkly!

You're best off having linen dry cleaned.

I've done controlled shrinking only once. With a tweed cap. It was too big, so I wore it in the rain and let it dry.

I couldn't get it off for five years and when I did I was almost bald.

Just be careful.

"It shrinks, gets misshapen and all wrinkly!"

Sounds like this could have snuck over from the postpartum experience thread...

I had a great pair of linen capris years/sizes ago. Not knowing any better, I washed/dried. Gave them to a friend's elementry school-aged daughter afterwards.

A lot of linen is preshrunk - was the shirt soft when you bought it? If it was soft it was probably washed and preshrunk. I wash linen all the time.
