We'd like to get a good sized sandbox, preferably made of wood, with a cover. Any suggestions about where to go and what to look for? Thanks. |

I actually have a covered plastic sandbox to give away. It's faded and weatherworn, but intact. PL me if interested. |

I just made my own out of some of those fake wood planks use to build decks, use some of the square posts for the corners.

I got one on Ebay. Solid wood with canvas canopy, easy 2 person assembly. Cost about $100.00 |

Wow, nice job Monster! Do you use anything to cover it? The only reason I was going to head to Toys R Us for a plastic covered box is that my neighbor's large herd of outdoor cats already uses my backyard garden as a litter box, so I shudder to think of the fun they could have with a nice pile of pristine sand. |

BJs and Costco both sell nice wooden ones. The one Costco has is shaped like a boat and much more expensive. I want to say the one at BJs is either $69 or $89?... it comes with a canvas canopy as well as a cover. If you're not a member of either, you may be able to get a one-day trial membership. There's also a kit they sell on Amazon that looks HUGE. But it's pricey and the cover is sold separately for an add'l expense. You can probably be crafty and do something like monster did for much less money. And ina - i just sent you a p/l about your sandbox. I'd be interested in it if blue angel doesn't take you up on your offer. |

Thanks so much for the info. ina, I do appreciate your offer but i would prefer a non-plastic box so papayagirl should take it. Are the ones that BJs and Costco sell big enough for two or three kids to play in? I did a search for sandboxes on-line and most of them only seem big enough for two small kids who like to play very close to each other... |

The Costco one is very nice. I think it's big enough. |

The BJ's one is big enough for 2-3 kids. After that may be pushing it, although i bet you could fit 4 if the kids wanted to play badly enough. That was my criteria for wanting to buy one too, and it definitely seemed bigger than most of the plastic ones they sell at TRU. Same with the Costco version. I tried to sell my husband on buying the BJ's one, but he's pretty bound and determined to build his own as well, and since we'll be tearing up our yard later this summer, it doesn't make sense for him to sink much effort into it just yet. Thus, my need for a temporary sandbox for a 2 year-old who really really loves to dig. As it happens, i have a photo of the one they sell at BJs that a friend sent me so i could see how big it is. Blue angel - if you want to p/l me with your email address, i can reply and attach it. I thought about posting it here, but because it's not my child in the photo, it probably isn't my place to post it on a public site. |

cjh, I haven't had a problem with cats, in the fall/winter I take the tops off of the corners (they lift right off), put a tarp over the box, and put the tops back on, pushing the tarp down into the posts to help hold it in place. For your cat problem you may consider cutting the corner posts so that they are shorter, put the tarp on and get a few bungee cords, or thread a nylon rope through the tarp, and pull it tight around the box. Another thought is to cut them even with the top of the box, and making a folding top for the box, maybe in two half's, each half with hinges so that each folds up and can be placed aside. |
