Sorry for cross-posting (food/dining section), but mother in law is coming to town without much notice. I know the Short Hills Hilton is supposed to be great, but it's booked. Any other recommendations for a good sunday brunch?

thanks

Village Cellar wasn't open tonight. Not sure what's going on there. Call ahead.

Fathers Day??? We Aussies observe that in September (first Sunday)! Now I know why there were so many references throughout the Board to Fathers Day cards...! How come you guys chose June for your celebration?

Joanne G -

from http://wilstar.com/holidays/fathers.htm#HISTORY

Sonora Dodd, of Washington, first had the idea of a "father's day." She thought of the idea for Father's Day while listening to a Mother's Day sermon in 1909.
Sonora wanted a special day to honor her father, William Smart. Smart, who was a Civil War veteran, was widowed when his wife died while giving birth to their sixth child. Mr. Smart was left to raise the newborn and his other five children by himself on a rural farm in eastern Washington state.

After Sonora became an adult she realized the selflessness her father had shown in raising his children as a single parent. It was her father that made all the parental sacrifices and was, in the eyes of his daughter, a courageous, selfless, and loving man. Sonora's father was born in June, so she chose to hold the first Father's Day celebration in Spokane, Washington on the 19th of June, 1910.

[ edited to add:
In 1909, Mrs. Dodd approached her own minister and others in Spokane about having a church service dedicated to fathers on June 5, her father's birthday. That date was too soon for her minister to prepare the service, so he spoke a few weeks later on June 19th. - from http://www.usemb.se/Holidays/celebrate/fathers.html ]

President Calvin Coolidge, in 1924, supported the idea of a national Father's Day. Then in 1966 President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the 3rd Sunday of June as Father's Day. President Richard Nixon signed the law which finally made it permanent in 1972.

A far cry from the Hilton, but we had a decent brunch at Scotti's (the steak house) in Short Hills a couple of years back on Father's Day. It's a tad dingy inside, if I recall correctly, but we ate outside (not immediately on the street) and that was very pleasant. The fare is not particularly unusual or that exceptional but it was reasonably priced and everything was pretty tasty. A recent brunch experience at the Village Cellar was nice, but it seemed overpriced to me--and there were not that many food choices (but more upscale than Scotti's).

If you want to take an hour drive, try Perona Farms in Andover (Sussex County). They have a huge spread, with both breakfast and lunch food.
