That's what the letter says.

FWIW it's also the time swim lesson sign up starts. (What brilliant soul thought signup on Father's Day morning was a good idea??)

hismom, while "brilliant souls" may not be in evidence regarding all pool rules, what is your problem with having the first (not the last) day of signing up for swim lessons on a day that was created by Hallmark to sell cards? Maybe you can figure out how to insult less and hesitate about posting more.

Georgie - better late than never, but 8pm (which is the normal closing time except for Mon & Tues of this week).

Wendy - If you'd look at my posts I haven't posted all that often in the many years I've lived here. Sunday church services for Father's Day in addition to many families (my in-laws included) who hold the day in high regard. While it may not be the only time, it is the only one I could possibly make with the schedule we have. Many classes were filled/closed today and the poor staff was overwhelmed with the very large crowd on this hot day.

The following is taken from Suzanne Ng in the Sunday Brunch thread below:
from http://wilstar.com/holidays/fathers.htm#HISTORY

Sonora Dodd, of Washington, first had the idea of a "father's day." She thought of the idea for Father's Day while listening to a Mother's Day sermon in 1909.
Sonora wanted a special day to honor her father, William Smart. Smart, who was a Civil War veteran, was widowed when his wife died while giving birth to their sixth child. Mr. Smart was left to raise the newborn and his other five children by himself on a rural farm in eastern Washington state.

After Sonora became an adult she realized the selflessness her father had shown in raising his children as a single parent. It was her father that made all the parental sacrifices and was, in the eyes of his daughter, a courageous, selfless, and loving man. Sonora's father was born in June, so she chose to hold the first Father's Day celebration in Spokane, Washington on the 19th of June, 1910.

[ edited to add:
In 1909, Mrs. Dodd approached her own minister and others in Spokane about having a church service dedicated to fathers on June 5, her father's birthday. That date was too soon for her minister to prepare the service, so he spoke a few weeks later on June 19th. - from http://www.usemb.se/Holidays/celebrate/fathers.html ]

President Calvin Coolidge, in 1924, supported the idea of a national Father's Day. Then in 1966 President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the 3rd Sunday of June as Father's Day. President Richard Nixon signed the law which finally made it permanent in 1972.
