We are relatively new to the area and need to find a good vet for our dog. I did a search, and found names of vets recommended by cat owners, and although I'm sure the same doctors are fabulous with the canine variety as well, we'd love to hear from dog owners and get their input. Thanks for the help! |

Dr Stack at Valley Veterinary Hospital (Millburn Avenue and Valley). We have two shelter dogs, one of which was in pretty shabby condition when he was rescued. Dr Stack and his wonderful staff spent a lot of time and patience and love helping us nurse that dog into the plump, bossy little playboy he is now. (I'd upload pictures if I could figure it out.) Dr Stack is a character -- and I mean that in the best possible way -- gruff, candid, compassionate, and a dog-lover through-and-through. Very reasonable fees and I've never had to wait to get an appt. When I was a novice dog owner with Puppy One she came in from the backyard drooling like Cujo. I panicked and rushed her over to Dr Stack, who took a look inside her mouth and said "She ate a bug. She'll be fine." Didn't even charge me. Sure enough, a half-hour later she was fine. Thirsty, but fine. "She ate a bug" is now our default explanation for anything, anywhere, that seems worse than it is. Valley Vet: 973-763-3445 |

Dr. Rogers just took over the practice at Maplewood Animal Hospital. So far, I like him very much. The hours are odd, but you don't need an appointment. Just call to find out what the hours are, and then bring your dog over. Sometimes, he will take you at a time when he is normally closed, so it pays to call. Did Dr. Malampati retire?! I heard that he might, but was really hoping that it was a vicious rumor. Who is Dr. Rogers? |

Yes, Dr. Mallampati retired and sold the practice to Dr. Rogers. Give him a try. I think you'll like him.

Another vote for Dr. Stack at Valley Veterinary Hospital, corner of Millburn Ave and Valley St. Make sure he's in a good mood before you go. And if you play golf and/or smoke fine cigars, you've got it made! And say hello to Toni when you're there. |
