Hi, I just wanted to ask if anyone knew of a "Stitch and Bitch" type knitting group that meets regularly in South Orange or Maplewood. Or would anybody be interested if I started one for knitters of all levels? We could meet at the Dancing Goat once a week.

There is an informal knitting circle that meets at Pen & Jen's on Saturday mornings. Not quite a Stitch & Bitch (I'm a big fan of those books) but a nice circle nonetheless.

That said, I would guess there would be interest in a S & B type group at another time during the week, for those for whom Saturday mornings may not always be convenient. There are quite a few avid knitters on MOL.

That's good to know..Thanks! Do you know what time they meet?

So do you think MOL would be the best way to publicize a new group? What day/time of the week do you recommend?

Sorry, lots of questions I know. But I'm relatively new here, so not sure how most things would work.

I've been looking for a group too! On another post (which is impossible to find since the search funtion doesn't work), somebody mentioned that a new cafe was to open on maplewood ave and they would be sponsoring a snb. Apparently the owner is an avid knitter.

I think its Cafe Meow on Springfield that promises to have knitting. Their sign said they were to open in May, but it looks like there's still quite a bit of work to be done. Hopefully they will open soon. There's also a knitter's circle as part of Mothers and More that meets once or twice a month(you would have to be a member of the chapter.)

There's a group of women who meet periodically at St. Joseph's in Maplewood, who work on shawls to give to shut ins and hospital bound patients in the area. If you contact Gail in the rectory she can give you info.

Church info is avail online www.stjosephsmaplewood.org

There used to be a needlework group (knitters included) which met at the Maplewood Library. The organizer has since moved to the Netherlands. I don't know if the group is still active but it should be easy enough to check.

I'd also like to be involved. I'm an extremely avid knitter. Can't really make it to P&J on Saturday mornings, at least during school year because of kid's activities. Though I've heard it's a really nice group.

If there's enough interest, maybe I could try to find more information about Cafe meow -opening soon? If that doesn't work out, I'll try to find another place. If a group of 7-10 people got together on a regular basis, I'm sure a local business would be happy to have new customers.

Hi Ladies, Just wanted to update you. There were so many responses here and also under "South Orange Specific" where I also posted, that I called the Dancing Goat so see if we would meet there.

It seems that they have something going on every night of the week. Pretty much the only day that will work is Wednesday when they have "open mic night" starting at 8pm, so we'd have to be done before that, ie, 5.30-7.30 pm. That seems to be the only weekday option. If most of you are okay with this, then I'll go ahead and confirm with them. If not, Winniegirl and I can research some other places for a weekday group (I'd love to come to PJs too, but weekends are usually occupied).

So please post your responses and let me know! Thanks

5:30 is also a little too early for me, unfortunately. I don't get in the door from work much before 5:15 most nights. Maybe depending on how camp works out for my kid - I usually try to get out early to pick her up early. If you confirm that this is happening I will do my best to get there, but I may not know if I can be there any given week until that day.

It might work in the fall, depending on Mr. CLK's schedule - he usually teaches at least one evening class, but we won't know what day of the week until much later in the summer.

Okay Everyone,

Based on the responses, it seems like a later time would suit everybody, so I looked around for another option. I know this is somewhat short notice, but I hope it will work.

Tuesdays (starting tomorrow)
6-8pm
Here's to the Arts Cafe in Maplewood (http://www.herestothearts.com/)

Their address is 97 Baker Street in Maplewood. It's a relatively new cafe cum bar, and the owner, Art, is really nice and very open to our group.

When I talked to Art (I think Winniegirl also went and spoke to him earlier), we decided we'd give it a try tomorrow and see how it goes. If we like it and they like us, we can continue every Tuesday. If it doesn't work out, we always have the Dancing Goat on Wednesdays.

So I'm going to be there tomorrow, and I hope some of you can make it. Again, I'm sorry for the short notice.

Oh, and I've created a yahoo group (yes, I'm having a case of new knitter's excitement) called soma-snb, which we can use to communicate within the group. So please sign up. Since I've created the group, I'm currently the moderator, but if anyone would like to take over, please let me know. I'm not good at managing group lists!

Looking forward to meeting people tomorrow.

what a difference a day makes! I was away from email for a day and now we have a knitting group. Thanks Vineeta! I did talk to Art today (he happened to walk in as I was peering through the locked door), and he seemed really enthusiastic. See you all tomorrow.

Yay! That's a great time, nearly perfect. Does H2TA do wine by the glass?

Tonight I HAVE to get to the allergist, but I'll stop by after I'm done. Prob. a little late, like 6:30 or 7. After this week I'll have no problems with that time. See you later tonight. I'm guessing the group will be easy enough to identify ... people with sticks & thread ... I'll have a blue sock ....

Me too!

I'll stop by at 6. I love Art/HTTA, but my only concern is the light - is there enough light for us to work?

Knitting and drinks. It's a dream come true. Thanks for arranging this Vineeta!

Oh, you're right las - hadn't thought of that, it's kind of dark in there. Well we'll see - maybe it'll be more "b" and less "s" ? Or we could invest in some flashlights.

I did think about that but, at 6 it's not crowded and we can sit near the front. At least in the summer, daylight will be available until 8. And in the fall/winter, I think they can bring up the lights. I'll be there with a little orange sweater...

I'll be stopping at Yarnware on Eagle Rock Road about 4 pm if anyone has a notion urgency. Feel free to post it here or p/l me before 1 pm.

I also have a small flourescent knitting lamp I'll bring along for those of us with truly poor vision. It can illuminate an entire table of knitters.

Pen's and Jen's is great on Saturdays. Very friendly group and very diverse in the talent, skill set and what is knitted. I would not mind joining another group that met after work and during the week. There is a really nice group that meet at Barnes and Noble in Springfield on Monday morning 10-12 in the Cafe. Another really great group that is very talented and has show and tell when projects are done.
Since summer is here, the train station will soon be too warm and Pen and Jen may have different hours.

Stop thanking me ladies, it's embarrasing. I really didn't do all that much.

In any case, next Tuesday is 4th July so HTTA will be closed. We will NOT be meeting next week. However, starting the Tuesday after that, ie, 11th July we will meet from 6- 8pm. I'll post all this on the yahoo groups site, which we can all use for announcements and things.

See you then!

Hey Guys. Sorry I didn't jump into this sooner, but I just found out about this thread this minute! It's Mrs Mooch here, from Cafe Meow.

I am an avid knitter (although lately I've been a construction worker, small business owner, antique/junk restorer and painter :0).

I DESPERATELY want a knitting group/s at my shop. It would be a dream come true. When I was in Ann Arbor (my husband was at grad school @ the Unv of Michigan) I joined a knitting group that met in an assisted living place party room because that was the only place they could find at the time. I strongly urged we moved the place to a cafe (like mine, with comfy couches, caffeine, atmosphere and music) and they never looked back once we moved.

I never get to knit anymore (unless it is xmas and I'm making my 50th xmas stocking) and having knitting groups at my shop would be a great incentive!

We are in the final weeks of construction and should be open by late July. While I don't have a liquor license, you can BYOB (even better in MHO) :-)

Please keep me in mind for your future gatherings!!! Maybe we could start a Thursday night extension group at my cafe??????

Thanks and I look forward to meeting you all!

Mrs Mooch,

aka: Christine (owner, Cafe Meow)
