I was informed this weekend, to my horror, that if you chill beer, let it warm to room temperature and then chill it again, it ruins the taste. Is that true? |

Absolutely. Beer that has had this done to it is called skunk beer, I think. This is not an old wives' tale, but is in fact legitimate. |

I don't know about that. I've survived this before. You buy a twelve pack of cold beer, because you want to drink one right away. You put some in the fridge, but they don't all fit. They reach room temp, but the next time you have room in the fridge, you rotate them in. Cold, room temp, cold again. This must happen so often. The fact that there's debate about whether the beer skunks suggests skunking happens very rarely. When I was under 21 we would hide beer outside, sometimes from one weedend to the next, unrefrigerated. THAT ruins the flavor. J.B. |

I worked in a brewery while in college. It was the only job I ever had where drinking on the job was encouraged! Heat is a big enemy of beer. Do all you can to keep it cold. Temp shifts will eventually kill it but it happening once should only be noticed by the beer snob. If you can't keep it in the fridge, store it in a cool unlit place. Sunlight kills beer too. Drink it as soon as you can. Beer= Good Fresh Beer= Very Good Sunlight= Bad Heat= Bad |

I have a 12 pack of Genny in my garage that's been there for 3 years. How do you think that will be? |

I bought it for the slugs in my hostas. I didn't realize that I still had one until I cleaned out the garage yesterday. I hope the slugs still like it. Otherwise, maybe I could give it to the Tiki Bar gods as an offering..... |

Genny...shudder...flashback to Genny Cream Ale You could probably leave it there another three years and I don't think it will get any worse. |

if you don't beleive it, try it out. The skunk'd taste is relative and probably depends on the beer. beers like miller light and coors light that have no taste might not be affected by it, but it does get skunked. in college i had my fair share of skunk'd natty light and beast! if you buy it cold, store it cold. if you can't store it cold, buy it warm and put what you can in a cold place. |

It takes more than one time of warm and cold, warm and cold, to make skunk beer It has to happen several times, and yes the clear bottles are an enemy of beer, green isn't much better, too much exposure to sunlight is definitely a skunker, and it takes more than a day. |

Of course these people over at the Beer Advocate disagree, but in my personal experience it takes some time for beer in the sunlight to take on what I consider the skunked characteristic, perhaps I was wrong in saying it takes more than a day, but then again I've never left my beer setting out in direct sunlight for that long. |
