a limb on a tree outside of my house looks dead (peeling bark; no leaves). who do I call to have the limb removed before it falls and harms someone or something?

Over here in Howlong, Australia, I'd inform my local Council's parks people and see if htey had a work crew coming over any time soon. I'd include a reference to 'who'd be the party sued if someone or their car gets hurt?' in my question, to ensure a speedy answer!

Where is the tree that is attached to the limb located? If it is on the strip between the sidewalk and street, it's a town tree & you can call DPW. If it's a neighbor's tree but hangs over the property line, you can call any tree service and have it trimmed to the property line. Or ask your neighbor if they are planning on having the trees trimmed. Maybe you'll be lucky & they'll do it. If it's yours, call a tree pro.

The tree people are all busy right now; I called 4 last week. All were highly recommended here. One never returned the call, another only does estimates M-F from 9-3:30 (we both work) and the other two came over and gave me estimates within days. They are in the same ball park money-wise, they both gave the same advice about trees and both need a few weeks to get us on the schedule.

I haven't retained one yet, but I'd be happy with either.

the tree is on the strip between the sidewalk and the street, so it looks like i called the right people. just wish there had been a body there to speak with. any idea how long the town will take to respond?

Todd Lamb (sp?) is the Maplewood arborist and can be reached at Town Hall. (Full disclosure - he also has his own tree business.) My experience is that he is very responsive. When he came to look at the hatchet job the PSE&G tree trimmers had done to a town tree in front of my house, it was clear that he is knowledgeable, enjoys his work, and wants Maplewood's trees to be both beautiful and well cared-for.

Homm- were you happy (duh, or you wouldn't recommend them) with the results and price? They are one of my two choices.

I use Tree Tech (973) 379-0775.

They're great with regular maintenance if you want, too. (Deep root fertilization, annual pest prevention on landscape trees and shrubs.)

Greentree - Yes, we were very happy. Had trees trimmed (large and small), stumps ground, etc. The price was good.

Pd- Tree Tech was the place that only gives estimates during the week. I need to be there because I have some specific issues to ask about. And it's good to know that you are both talking about the same tree when they make their recommendations.

Thanks, Hom. I think I'm going to book them. They gave me a flat per-tree price and the other place was hourly. All things being equal, I like knowing what to expect.
