When I type, I rest my fingers on the keys and just depress each key to type.jjjjjjj There it goes again. This light pressure on the "j" key is causing "jj's" to pop up all over the place. They other keys are acting normal. This is especially troublesome when typing "j" on purpose, because I get a ton of 'em. Any idea how to fix this? JJJJJJJ.B. |

blow it out with some canned air, you may have some food crumbs under there. Or if you have a clean paint brush or something, start stickin it under the keys and clean them out. Or just take the keyboard, flip it up and shake, lightly bang on the desk to loosen crumbs and dust, unless it's attached to a laptop, then just tilt it and do all the above except perhaps shaking and banging. Or (if you are at work) switch it for a cow-workers keyboard get a new one.... |

I just bought a new keyboard at work. It was $18. Of course, it's basic, no fancy configuration and is wired. |

seriously, turn on your 'sticky keys' in the Accessibility options until you can take it in to an appropriate geek place to have it cleaned. Joanne, who always does weird stuff like that and is too embarassed to talk about it but won't be any more - thanks JB |

Did you know that you can take your iBook keyboard off and wash it, I've even heard of people using the dishwasher on their keyboards, light cycle, warm water, a little-little regular soap. After washing dry it the best you can and then stick it in front of a fan to dry off for a day or so (not laying flat, but propped up at an angle). I just did this a couple of weeks ago with one of my iBook keyboards, though I did it under a faucet, no harm done. Now why did I do it, I had some keys that weren't working, but it didn't help me, after closer inspection with a magnifying glass I determined that 1 or 2 trace wires in the ribbon cable that plugs into the iBook from the board had blown. Now ask how that happened, a wee bit of beer spilled into the keyboard and went where it doesn't belong, and no it wasn't my beer, I'm just glad it was the older spare/family/guest iBook and not mine. Now I have to look for a cheap keyboard, or use a USB keyboard until then. Now, is the iBook under warranty, do you have Applecare, if so take it in. If not, I will post below some links that could be of use. check out this site, http://mij.oltrelinux.com/ibook/cleaning_keyboard/ or, http://geektechnique.org/projectlab/160 or, http://www.sterpin.net/uk/reattachingkeykeyboarduk.htm

Where do I find the "sticky keys" or rather, where to I find the Accessibility options? J.B. And k-soze, I was blaming it on the hooch all weekend, but now I'm reasonably sober and it persists. Thus the Monday post. |

Sticky keys is under Universal Access in your System Preferences, under the Keyboard tab. |

Mosnter, thanks for helping with the accessibility question while I was at work - did it help, JB? and thanks, Monster for those links - they're really handy to have! Although I don't use anything other than a PC several non-geeky colleagues in remote locations do use iBooks, so having handy tips like these a) make me sound knowledgeable and b)raise the self-reliance of our workforce.

Sorry JB. I know it's a drag as it does slow you down (altho it will speed up some as it gets used to your finger pressure), however it does delete the duplicate-j problem until you can get that key seen to. So now you have choice. Sticky keys are great for people who have uneven finger-weight or finger-pressure; it actually allows them to type at a somewhat normal speed and have relatively few mistakes. You don't need to have an actual 'disability' to be using that function. Useful function once you know about it, and I believe Mac were the first to introduce it. |
