Brother is in town, at 53/3. Prefers steak. Considers spaghetti "ethnic food".

Sis-in-law wants to stop by for a bit, but has to get back to office. Doesn't care what we eat. Works at 30 Rock.
Greenetree coming in to Penn or 33rd Path. Prefers vegetarian, sushi, the like.

Baby Bro is at 33/3. Not a big steak person, either.

TS coming from UES (Lex line).

Where can we eat that is kind of central to all of this, isn't a tourist trap (any steak place in midtown, IMO) won't be a choice between the check and the mortgage payment, wouldn't need a reservation and isn't a "dining experience".

Tonight.

Thankey.

Not sure about the veggie (you) but Capital Grille is very good on 42nd and 3rd (right outside of Grand Central). I had a really good salad there once (with steak) but i'm sure you could not get the meat and voila-vegetarian. Check out menupages.com-lists restaurants by neighborhood and type of food-including prices. that might be your best bet!

Hapon on 43rd between 2nd and 3rd is great sushi-they have all the typical japanese items including the bento boxes with meat for the steak people. their edamame is delicious.

If your brother doesn't come to town often, you might as well do it right.

For steaks, I recommend The Post House at 28 E. 63rd St. (between Madison & Park; inside the Lowell Hotel). 212-935-2888. Best beef I've had in NYC.

Zagat:

"A magnet for movers and shakers of both sexes, this East Side beef eater's must offers succulent steaks, wonderful sides and stellar wines in a handsome setting. Sevice is respectful and even though you'll pay top prices, most consider it a privilege to do so."

I recall eating there for 2 for not much more than $100, including a couple glasses of wine. Maybe prices have gon up. It's expensive, yest, but at least it's worth it. And memorable. The waiters are not unemployed actors; they're professionals.

Lig- if he weren't from Chicago, I would agree. But, he lives at Ground Zero for steakhouses.

It actually sounds like a nice place for a leisurely dinner. But, I have an early meeting in the morning, so tonight isn't the night for that kind of treat.

Thanks, tho.

I told Baby Bro to ask him about "Japanese Steak" rather than "sushi". But, he's smarter than he looks & didn't go for it.

Keep 'em coming. Capital or Hapon sound doable so far. We may try to meet closer to 33/34th.

Sorry, I didnt read your request well enough -

try this place - Connellys on 45th between 6th and 7th. Reasonable Irish pub - steak, seafood, pasta. Good food at good prices, nice decor, easy access to public transportation..

Thanks, Pip.

I was hoping. That way, I would be right near my brother's apt. & be able to drop in and see the kids. I wonder what it's like early, around 6:30ish.

Connelly's sounds like a possibility, too. Have you actually been there?

Sure have. I ate there May 31st with my wife (26th anniversary), before Bway. It was the second time and both times were very nice. The wait staff dont rush, the food is very good and satisfying, and wont kill your budget.

With a mixed crowd of people it presents a lot of good choices.

Ended up at Maloney and Porcelli. The food was great. Our waiter was a real rectal opening when he realized that the only alcohol to be ordered was one beer and one glass of wine and proceeded to become the entire large intestine as the night wore on. I didn't choose the place or pay the bill, so I didn't have much influence on leaving him a 10% tip.

We had a good time, tho.

Greenetree, glad you had fun, but sorry about the sphincter-like qualities of the waiter.

Pippi, please tell me more about Mercury Bar.
