I've had to turn off my computer speakers because for months I have been getting these weird audio interruptions--movie-type sounds of creaking doors, slamming doors, bird song, children's laughter and/or voices, a Santa-type ho-ho-ho. This is not interference from other people's homes: the sounds always are the same and have a "fake" quality and are very distinct (and LOUD). Does anyone know what these could be and how I can get rid of them? |

Z, Your computer is probably infested w/ spyware/adware. PL is a private message that should arrive at the email address that you used to register. |

Yeah, what he said. I basically said to send me a phone number so we can chat and figure out what your issue is. I'm sure its a straightforward fix... famous last words... |

Thanks. Funny, I just ran anti-spyware and adware programs for the first time, but it didn't affect the noises. I used Spybot and ... um, I forget what the other program was. |

I use Spybot and Lavasoft's Ad-Aware. Make sure you do the library updates before you run the scans. Also, try running the scans under SAFE MODE, one after the other. Sometimes spyware programs will load processes that prevent programs such as Spybot and Ad-Aware from deleting the offending programs. I have had a great deal of success with these two programs (not always, but for the most part). One program is not a replacement for the other. They actually complement each other. There are other, more advanced, tools such as Hijackthis, that you can use to clean up your registry. |

When you do get this worked out, please post about it. I can't speak for others, but I'm very curious... |

I haven't heard from him yet, but I'm really wondering if it might not be something as innocent (everything is relative) as the AOL IM client - that damned thing occasionally pops up with audio. We'll straighten it out.... |

It could be Yahoo Messenger, do you have it installed? If you do, uninstall it and then re-install, but do a custom install and don't install all the extra crap. Are there sound sets installed on you computer, perhaps from old screensavers? Have you checked your running processes? Have you downloaded Ewido and run it, in safe mode? Does the sound only happen when the computer has been idle for a few moments, such as when you stop typing & moving the mouse? ???? |

I had that. Turned out to be a feature of AOL IM and a lot of my friends playing with it. One guy, everytime he logged in or off a door would open or slam shut. I turned off my speakers. Later, George |

George, you can turn off the sounds for when someone comes online and they go offline in AIM. Under Preferences... Buddy List... Sounds... you can either choose to not hear sounds, or change the sounds you hear. |

I got busy and didn't have time to check in on this thread... but thanks, everyone, for the advice. When I get this problem fixed (haven't yet), I'll post the solution. I have run Spybot and Lavasoft's Ad-Aware a couple of times, but it hasn't gotten rid of then noises. I will run them in Safe Mode, if someone explains to me how to do that. Also, I'd like to try Rastro's advice on turning off the sounds in AIM. I went to aim.com but didn't see a menu with Preferences in it. Any further advice on how to get to the sound controls? Monster, good questions. The sounds happen all the time, not just when the computer has been idle. And we're getting the same sounds on a new computer we've just set up in a different area of the house (but linked to my same e-mail account). What is Ewido? |

Zebra: Do you get these noises even when you are not connected to the internet? If your computer is connected to the internet all of the time, try logging off the internet for an hour or two and see if the noises persist. |
