My friend's kid somehow set her iPod Nano up with a passcode. It is now 'locked' and we can't get it to unlock. The four digit code she used doesn't work. Anyone have a suggestion?

When one of the nephew's had a problem with his shuffle I reset it to it's original condition. Can I do this with the Nana? It doesn't matter if the music is 'lost' / erased from the Nano. Thanks!

It usualy unlocks automagically when you connect it to an Authorized computer, if that computer isn't available, connect it to another computer and use iPod Updater to restore the iPod software, though with this method you will lose everything on the Nano and it will be set to default settings.

If you can connect it to the authorized computer, and it unlocks, when you return to the Screen Lock screen it will show you the combination, unless they have fixed this with an update.

Hey Monster-
Yeah I tried that before I posted. I even tried to restore it. Nothing worked. I set up the iPod for the friend's daughter for her so everything was on my computer. I must have spent hours on it, finally giving up at 4am. It kept saying 'do not disconnect...' I waited and waited and waited for it to finish.

Somehow my computer then decided it needed to reboot. Then the real fun started because it screwed up my internet connected; plus the iPod was still in the USB port.

Somehow when I came home a couple of hours later I tried a bunch of other things (not sure what I did) and I got it to reset. It seems, somehow this kid put a 'lock' on the iPod. Only, the number she though she set it up with was not correct.

Is there a way to prevent her from doing this again?

Remember that book I was telling you about last weekend? That's what saved me!

For future reference, you can view the file at the following path and it will have the code in it, in plain text.
Ensure that your system is set to view hidden files and folders

"\iPod_Control\Device\_locked"

Steps:
Mount the nano (plug it in)
Navigate to X:\iPod_Control\Device\ (where X is the drive letter of the iPod)
Find the file called "_locked" and open it with Notepad or TextEdit
There's your code.
OR... rename the file to _unlocked
Close Textedit/Notepad, and eject iPod from computer

I don't know of a way to disable this function completly, I'll see what I can find out.
