Hello, I am a Linux systems engineer and was wondering if there were any local computer groups people were aware of, or part of.

More specifically, what are you looking for. A colleague of mine runs the linux user group which is part of the ACGNJ which I think stands for amateur computer group of NJ. They were founded long ago, before there were many computer professionals, which is why they use the word amateur. I believe many or most of the members are now professionals. The Linux group meets at 8pm on the first Monday of every month in Scotch Plains.

I am a member of $GROUPNAME which is a group of system administrators in NJ. http://www.groupname.org. We meet every two or three months. We're not all that regular.

I went to LISA this year which was the first time I had done something like that, and found it fun to hang out with other computer geeks. I mean, I do it at work all the time, but it was nice not to be in a work environment.

Groupname sounds interesting, I actually went to Tom Limoncelli talk while at LISA and bought his book. I will join their mailing list.

Thanks for the info.

Tom Limoncelli and I are friends. We worked together for several years. Look me up in the index. I'm mentioned in both of his books, for a few small innovations. We also co-authored some papers.

LISA and Usenix are great. They're so stimulating. The nice thing about meeting colleagues who are not cow-orkers is that they are doing different things with the same tools, so you get different perspectives and ideas.

It's usually up to me, to an extent, to organize the $GROUPNAME meetings, so thank you for the nudge. I'll start the next one up.
